Honestly, the shorter grip on my SIG P239 doesn't bother me at all and it's probably the most accurate gun I own. It's just that on this SIG 1911, the mainspring housing is checkered at 20 LPI and I can just envision that taking a bite out of my hand. The SIG P239 is about the only model no one make mag extensions for, but the ergonomics of it don't make it uncomfortable to shoot at all, at least in 9mm and .40. I wouldn't want one in .357SIG. I'll have no problem getting a magwell or magazine mods for this, as 1911 parts grow on trees.

What are Sig X-5s http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/manufacturers_id/51/products_id/50878 are they really any better. Better match grade barrel or something. Is a match grade barrel really any better on a handgun?

Rick, why did you get rid of the P7? What didn't you like about it?

Hey guys, what's a "Series 70 Commander" vs. ??? I've got a perfect Combat Commander (steel version) that I purchased almost 30 years ago, so I assume I have one, but was just curious, and a quick web search didn't return a definitive answer. I'm not into this stuff like you guys are (anymore), but sure do like my CC.

I really want a Sig 1911 since I'm reloading .45ACP, it would be great to shoot! I'm looking for a Sig that will shoot .40S&W and .357Sig with a barrel and magazine swap since I reload both of those cartridges and I don't have a pistol to shoot those with (yet). I just went to the range Friday evening with my S&W Model 645 and shot some of my reloaded .45ACP and I was very happy with the results. The S&W 645 is smooth and there isn't any more recoil than a 9mm produces. I bet the Sig 1911 shoots well!

Should be pretty easy to tell since they have "SERIES 70" stamped on the slides.

No complaints at all, other than the lack of a heat shield on the PSP's. That makes them get mighty hot at the range and don't cool off too fast in the AZ heat. Besides, CDNN is selling them now for $499, so it's the only high-quality, discontinued gun in the world whose price is dropping. When I got my first one, they were around $1000 and I sold that one about a week before a new batch of German police turn-ins flooded the US and dropped the prices again. I'd rather just wait until I have the cash for a an P7M8, M10 or M13. Besides, holsters and mags for all these P7 models are crazy expensive.

I guess mine isn't one then (I just checked). My serial number does start with a 70 however. I "think" I purchased mine in '80 (might have been '79 though). Do you know what the difference is between a "Series 70", and what I have?

I don't know a whole lot about them, but I thought they all had SERIES 70 or SERIES 80 stamped on the slides unless they were something else. Someone here has to know a lot more than I do.

Hey Keith, it deals with the firing pin block. You might check HERE for more info.

Thanks Hal! After reading that link, I don't even have to break mine down to check, I know it has the firing pin block back from when I purchased it .

man just shell out the big bucks for a springfield leatham special and be done with it. no snivileling allowed. each and every gun i was "cheap" on and then hot rodded the hell outta of it i regretted. why? cuz i spent wayyyyyyyyyy more hot rodding it than if i bought the zoomy version in the first place.

rule of thumb: buy what fits not glitz and glamour.

next go shoot 200 rds yes 200rds of 3 flavors. JHP/FMJ federal/winchester/remington or whatever flavor trips yer trigger ie. corbons.

do 3 shot groups at a time with each flavor. place very damp COLD shop rag over barrel after shooting. let cool. then repeat above and see what the hell kind of grouping ya got. pick the best flavor and go buy a 1000 rds and sit on it until dec 21 2012 when the nostradamus FIESTA comes to be. come on over to my house with yer 1000 rds and a case of cold juans and we will fight off the zombees together all the while lamenting we didnt buy MORE AMMO at wally world.

Well, that was the shortest SIG ownership ever, about 24 hrs. before I traded it for a Colt Series 70 Lightweight Commander. Don Davis and I hit the gun show and he STOLE a cherry SIG P229 in two tone, I believe the slide was a Robar NP3, with night sights for $450. Photos to follow soon.

Rick how many rounds do you gotta fire through the HK P7 cop model before it starts causing serious discomfort?

I'm seriously toying with the notion of buying one.

For carry duty, you'd have ot be in a serious firefight before it was too hot to shoot. And the mags are expensive enough that you won't be able to buy too many. I'd say, if you run through four mags pretty quickly, you'd have to put her down for a few minutes, shoot another gun for a while and then come back to it. At an indoor range with a/c, that's no problem. Outdoors in the summer here, be sure it's not the only gun you have at the range, or wear gloves. Otherwise, spend twice the money on the P7M8 model with the heat shield.

I wonder if my gunsmith could fabricate a heat shield for it. Seems like that'd be a good aftermarket item, a fella could make a few bucks selling those i bet.

4 mags worth is not enough (are we talking 13 round or 8 round mags? Speaking of, how much ARE the mags? You've mentioned their high cost a few times now).

At any rate, i need a sidearm with good sustainable firepower, in case the zombies ever come.

This is what i have been relying on since the early 90s...

Match grade bbl, trijicon night sights, mag-na-ported, hand fitted 6906 compact bbl/slide on full size(full capacity) 5903 grip frame, aftermarket extended safety, bobbed hammer, trigger job, custom finish, hogue grips, blah, blah, blah. I have about 10 high cap S&W 15rd mags for it as well. It's a great firearm, i just really want a P7...

Why not buy the real deal. It will never go down in value. I see them from $500 -$1,000 all the time.
Here is mine.

Keep that 6909 as a backup. Don got his gun yesterday for about what those 6906's are going for and his SIG is twice the gun. I hate those safeties.

Maybe the P7 mag prices have come down with the guns. But last time I got some, they were $50'ish per. They hold seven rounds, so 7+1. AFAIK, no one makes aftermarket mags for them. They are super, super guns. But like all guns, they have their place and can cause problems if used outside of their place. And unless you want the cheapo neoprene Uncle Mike's holster, which is adequate, the correct holsters for P7's ain't cheap either. And these guns are heavy too. For the weight and money it takes to have one of these as a CCW gun, I just prefer a SIG. But when funds allow, I'll snag another P7 or two. They seem to defy market economics at the moment, but at some point, a very high-quality German gun that's no longer in production has to start gaining value again. Doesn't it?

BTW, I saw a P9S like Charles Kieffner's yesteday for $1250.

1911's also have their place. This one below looks just like the one I got yesterday.
