I agree! That's why I've shifted gears and now seriously looking at the Colt.

Yeah, these days it's not that bad of a price, relatively speaking. As long as you know going in that you are paying full AWB-scare retail/mark-up. Sometimes the convenience factor (no shipping or FFL transfers) is worth it.

Although just an FYI: The 6721 is the non-stepped, heavy-barrel (HBAR) version. So, that gun is heavier and longer than the 6920. It also has a 1/9 barrel twist, so it's not as accommodating on ammo selection (vs. the 6920's 1/7 twist). The 6920 is the one in high demand, and I have still seen them for less than $1600 currently. You should be able to do a bit better on the 6721 if you are looking for a deal.

...And as I mentioned, you can still find them under $1600 if you are fairly resourceful (and maybe a little patient). You can find them all day long for $1700. I was looking for one for a while, but now I'd rather have a Bushmaster + $600 in my pocket.

Nice guns, but lots of hype IMO. I'd love to have one just for the cachet/investment/resale factor, but there are plenty of other black rifles out there that equal or surpass them for less $$ (LMT, Larue, & Noveske come to mind). Unless you are good buddies with Reed Knight himself, you wouldn't see a factory new gun order fulfilled for years anyway, even if you had the $$ (Gov't contracts come first).

IMO the US Army M-25 rifle is superior in every way that matters. I would not even compare it to the M-24, a weapon with much longer range than either the M-25 or SR-25(M-110). The lack of a forward assist on the SR-25 is highly peculiar.

Special forces groups are often guilty of having a "Gun of the month club" mentality, i view this to be one of those cases. The SR-25 addresses a problem that did not exist, IMO.

Shrug.

Generally speaking, i think most civives would be far better served with a Mini-14, it is a far more robust design than the AR, and it can operate in crappy environments without the special care and lubricants required by an AR. Mini-14s are also less than 1/2 the cost.

I bought a used Colt Sporter II AR15 for $800 last May and I really enjoy shooting it. If you get one, I'd recommend that you buy a lot of ammo, since the prices are climbing. I reload my own ammo and that's how I can afford to shoot it at the local range. Buy some extra magazines and get a cleaning kit (with boresnake). AR15's are a lot of fun to shoot and I imagine the S&W would be a decent rifle, I just prefer the Colt.

Bill, the Colt will not do anything better than a Bushmaster, Stag, Armalite or a Rock River Arms AR 15. If you gotta have a Colt, buy it, but I would hate to see you spend the extra dough if you are doing it because you think the other brands are of poor quality.

Go spend some time at AR15.com if you have not already and you will see plenty of guys who shoot 1000's upon 1000's of rounds through all the big name brands without issue.

Here is an article I found on AR15.com that is a very detailed AR selection guide. http://www.ar15.com/content/page.html?id=493

In case you ever plan on swapping uppers and lowers, I am pretty sure Colts have bastard sized pin holes that do not readily work with other brands of standard AR components. This of course won't matter if you never intend to marry different components together.

The Garand is a magnificent weapon. I often wonder why the US Military ever abandoned the M-14 rifle (an evolved Garand). To me, it is the ultimate expression of a battlefield rifle, and has never been surpassed.

I absolutely trusted mine (the M-21 is a M-14 derivative) with my life.

Yep I was just trying to make sure that WCC knows that Bushmaster, Armalite, RRA etc all make AR15's that are comparable in form/fit/function as a Colt, but without the extra price mark-up.

Thanks guys you've given me lots to consider.

Tim - that was a great article explaining the differences. That's going to be very helpful.

I would like some collectability and not just a shooter. I thought I was going to get that with a S&W but it's looking like a Colt would be the way to go.

When the next ban comes, ANYTHING will have some collectibility. I just picked up my Superior Arms lower receiver today for $79. It too will be collectible when the ban comes. I plan to get at least $400 for it eventually.
