Looking at a SW AR-15
Are these SW pretty much trouble free now? I've never owned or shot an AR but can't believe it's much different from any other semi-auto gun. I've bounced around lately from a couple WWII guns to an AR. I 'was this close' to buying an AR last week and passed to 'think' about it and called later that day with a couple questions and they said what AR, we are out of stock. I asked specifically about the one I looked at and they said it was sold. So I called around and everyone says they are recently sold out. One shop said if you can find one grab it because they are a 'hot item'. Are these really flying off the shelves that fast? Is it in fear of what BHO has in store?
PS: Move to PARF if you see fit.......

S&W should be very good. I bought an Armalite last year. It works beautifully. From my understanding, the Colt is "The One".
But...just try buying an M1A these days! Whew! Spendy!

Bill,
If you can't find one around home, let me know. There a couple of serious gun shops I know of around here.

I've heard nothing good about the SW M&P ar's, a friend of mine is in law enforcement and also sold them at a store part time- the issue had to do with barrel wear or splitting barrels, not sure. Given that, a lot of the info is hearsay but I would check into it first. I own a S&W firearm and am less than impressed with their quality control. Very good factory service, prompt turnaround, but...

Oh Haha - See what they have in AR-15s and email/call me. The SW is so far away that they 'complimentary' hold it for 1wk. I've looked at the M1 Garand, PPSH-41 (Burp gun) and the AR-15. I know Apples and oranges, but I've been into WWII stuff lately. A friend got me into the ARs.. Unfortunately, they are all 'probably' on BHOs list......

My $79.95 Olympia Arms lower receiver and $56 LPK just arrived. I'll pick them up this week and then the build begins. I saw no AR's for under $1000 at the gun show this past weekend.

The early S&Ws were made entirely made by Stag Arms. S&W put their name on them and raised the price $200. Now days S&W makes the lower receiver, and the barrels are made by Thompson Center. Can't say if thats good or bad, just FYI.

Bill, most folks with AR's will all tell you that the brand they own is the best. Basically AR-15's have evolved into a pretty reliable weapon.... Any of the modern name brand versions are going to work pretty d@mn good. Sometimes guys can manage to piece a lemon together with mismatched parts of questionable origin, but most current name brand stuff is going to function plenty good for a private citizen.
All that said, I of course am partial to the brand that I have... Rock River Arms... Here is an article about how Rock River beat out all the other "big" names and was awarded a 5000 gun contract with the DEA/FBI a few years ago. ![]() http://www.rockriverarms.com/images/pdfs/gm_oct04.pdf There is a dealer near Toledo.... Adco.... He is probably back ordered and sells alot of custom builds to guys in the sand box, but I bought my RRA flat top midlength 16" from him several years ago and he was great to deal with.

The S&W's I have purchased for work have been over the past year, year and a half. We haven't had any problems.
With that being said, my personal AR is a Rock River Arms heavy barrel Varmit model. It has been dead reliable. Bill |

I called a TON of places to see what was really available. I found quite a few Bushmaster and a few S&W along with one used SIG. But after at least 25 places NO ONE had a Colt AR. So naturally this is what I want now. So I kept calling around and I found one Colt AR-15 6721 actually not to far from me. So I put it on hold and will be picking it up tomorrow after work. It's ~1700 which I didn't think was too bad considering I couldn't find one pretty much anywhere in the State. I'm sure there are some someplace but I'm pretty much set on this one now. Thanks everyone!
Oh, BTW, I received a reply on the PPSH-41 from that collector and he was asking $21,900 for it. Couldn't get approval from the wife on that one. At least for now. I told her I will have one one day so prepare yourself...

Yikes Bill! It is your money, but unless it has a bunch of fancy toys already installed, you are paying about a $700 premium for an AR.

I've decided on a Kel-Tec Sub 2000 as my last pre-AWB2 gun.
I can't find them anywhere since they showed up on a Brady Campaign wish list. I did get my Bushmaster in August for a little over $1,000, and that was after prices had gone up due to raw material prices.

OhHaha - Not really. Thanks for the links any ways. All I found was Bushmasters and S&W. That's ok, but I kept looking. Heck!! 1700 for a gun?, try almost 22k for that PPSH-41. I'm still tempted on picking it up due to the documents and history. Bushmasters were around 1k and S&W was around 1200 and that SIG was 1175 used. I don't know where they were before BHO but from my limited research that Colt 'for today's prices' weren't out of line.
