ZOmbie gun duex - gunbroker.com purchases?

Anyone (especially in CA) had particularly good or bad experiences with gunbroker.com? I'm tracking both mini 14 and M1As right now. Hard to find anything in stock at local shops and my range will do FFL. I do notice that many sellers won't ship to CA even if the gun is "legal."

+ 1 on Gun Broker, bought my Springfield XD there. I am also following Mini 14's there, I wish I had bought 3 months when there under $500 used. Now the used are pulling $750 +. Damn, shoulda woulda coulda.

Gunbroker is great but as you've correctly noted, you need to do your homework to make sure what you want is legal in the People's Republik of Kalifornia. Make sure handguns meet the DOJ drop test requirements and call your FFL before you bid. Rifles are arguably a bit simpler but again you have to make sure you aren't in violation of any "assault weapon" restrictions or similar nonsense.

I've noticed that a LOT of sellers on GB simply say "no sales to CA", which I'm sure the DOJ and politicians are thrilled about and it's exactly what they want. But I've bought several from there - you just have to look and find people willing to work with you. Heck, if I lived out of state, I'd probably say "no sales to CA" too - it's a pain and a lot of potential headaches.

Another really good place to check is Calguns - since it's exclusively for CA, you can be pretty sure all the stuff sold there is legal (although again, check first).

I have the name of a REALLY good FFL guy in Redondo Beach if you want. Super nice, friendly and knowledgeable.

Many folks on GB don't ship to Cali. Make sure they do. You could always go to a local WM. Someone here turned me on to calguns.net. Don't know if you already look there, if not, take a look...

Finally? Why do you think I already have about 2K rounds of ammo in my apt?

One advantage of a Mini Nostatic, it's a lot lighter and shorter than the M1A, so would be a lot easier for the kid to use, should dad be incapacitated from zombie slaying> Haha. Both are great rifles though.

Aside from the political reasons not to ship to Cali (the "you made your bed, now lie in it" attitude) is that the extra steps involved open up the shipping FFL to Cali laws. And while the FFL may be in the right and legal, he/she may not be able to afford the legal fees to prove it.

I have had a dealer in Cali approach me about buying my entire open-bolt collection. I then saw that the same guy was selling one that I know he bought. He paid about $1500.00 for the piece and was selling it for $4,800.00 to the folks in Cali and the people were drooling over the price ready to take it off his hands at the asking price. I would not have thought that there was over $3000.00 in expenses to be able to sell the gun in CA.

How are gun owners responsible for the actions of the majority of the state electing politicians which are antigun?

Actually, the paperwork is fairly minor, but since folks can sell elsewhere with less hassle, they do.

Well, went to the range and they had a 10/22 so we shot that. What a hoot...ordered one on the spot. The boy seems to prefer long guns. No mini 14s to be had though, and I can't shoot that at my local range. I can shoot shotguns though. Looks like finding a used mini14 on GB or calguns will be the ticket, and also looking for an 870. Then I'll be ready for fun...

if you're getting a shotgun anyway, i would stress again...get a semi.

A nice side benefit of an 11-87 Remington is that it's gas operated, so it kicks a lot less than a 870. A used 11-87 is probably about the same price as a new 870.

I've owned a Remington 1187 in 12ga for 13 years and have used it for duck/goose/pheasant hunting and skeet/trap and it's a great shotgun. Very easy to shoot, minimal recoil and easy to clean. Very reliable and inexpensive. I bought mine used at the local Gander Mountain for $375, I believe, but that was 13 years ago...

My uncle has an 11-87 too. 5+1 capacity, 20" barrel, very good zombie gun, right out of the box. You can easily put 90x .33cal pellets down range in under 3 seconds with that puppy. Serious anti-zombie tonic. You are well prepared my friend.

Doesn't CA have some weird law now about FFL's in other states complying with some kind of registry in CA? I think that's why a lot of folks on GB won't sell to CA, not because they don't want to, but aren't allowed to. However, that law can't go for non-FFL's, so just find a few private party listings and contact the sellers. If you have a cool FFL to do transfers for you, I can get you anything you want in AZ and ship it to your FFL. Guns grow on trees around here.

My range will do private party FFLs, but they won't do drop-shipped ones from dealers. Since they sell retail they don't want to be competing with internet dealers. I'm buying the 10/22 from them. I'm paying a little more than I would from the lowest online price, but it is totally no hassle. Plus I can go shoot the weapon at the range during the 10 day waiting period.

I'm sure there are a few non-storefront FFL's left in CA who will do transfers for you. If you want something you can't get any non-CA dealer to ship to you and it's CA legal, I can get it for you here and mail it or bring it to your FFL on my next trip to LA. I hear there's a way around the hi-cap. mag. ban too, but we can discuss that offline.

So there is a local Mini 14 that is a '95 model, original box and parts, supposedly a 98% gun with little use. I know there were some changes over the years. Right now the local dealer is asking $600 with a $700 buy it now (seems a tad high). A new one will be around $875. Are the newer models worth the extra cash?

Yeah, I know they likely used to be lower but seems the price has risen. Go figure

The 95 model should be a 1:9 twist Ranch Rifle.

I found this tidbit on a site:

"Ruger made significant design alterations to the Mini-14 in 2005 which changed the receiver, rear and front sight configurations. All new Mini-14s are built as updated Ranch Rifles, with integral scope bases, non-folding ghost ring aperture rear sight (smaller than the original Mini-14 rear sight) and a winged front sight similar to that used on the Ruger Police Carbine."

Might want to look into the changes and see if a 2005+ model is worth spending the extra coin for. I'm not really familiar with the changes that were made.
