Those things are having babies, Bryon... you need to install some car condoms or something before it gets outta hand.

Mike,

Great story and how did the wife treat you when you got back to NC again? Bet it was interesting!

Byron,

There are just some things that you cannot say no to, and a nice Jag to cruise in is one of them at my household.

Nothing like nice leather to sit on while cruising

The wood inside is very nice

Byron, my '97 XJR daily driver is the same color as yours....carnival red.

I bought the car on a whim (and definitely for a bargain. i bought it last summer when gas was $5 a gallon; paid less than 4K for the car), and it's been one of my favorite cars so far. Goes like stink, super comfy, and classy.

I'm at 160K miles on mine, and it's still pristine. the PO was anal about maintenence; oil changes every 3000 miles with only factory jag oil filters, etc. the car came with a brand new battery....the factory jag battery...when i bought it.

once i get some time to do it, i plan on doing the supercharger pulley swap, and put a free flow exhaust system on that bad boy....

So what's the real 911 on an XK8 for the missus dueller?
Just bought one, a 2000 XK8 for our dates. Silver/black, well kept 80k miles for $12,500. PO spent over 10k the last four years at the dealer. Running well for me.

The wood seems to loose its shine on some cars. Find one that still is beautiful.

I was kinda thinking about doing this, but I'm going to sell it, as I just don't have time to play with it.

The XK and XJ had finish problems in 2000. The only fix is to replace the wood.

Honestly, I like my 2000 XJR a lot more than I expected to. I may have to put off selling this one.......at least for a few months. Honestly, they really are a freakin' steal.

Do your homework on the V8s.

I'll never forget going in to the local Jag repair shop to pick up a filter for my friend's XJR ('97 6-cylinder). They had posted a sign on the parts counter that said something to the effect of, "Due to inherent flaws in the design of certain Jaguar V8 engines, we are unable to guarantee any repair related to these systems."

The V8 is an excellent engine, with 2 issues: timing chain tensioners and Nikasil.

Nikasil info: http://www.jag-lovers.org/cjw/#0504x
Timing chain info: http://www.jag-lovers.org/cjw/#0104a

If Nikasil has not affected the engine (i.e. good compression) it won't. Nikasil problems were caused by high sulfur content in our gas, which was worse in certain states and low-test gas. These sulfur levels were reduced to safe levels by legislation in 2000, which means that 2000 and later Nikasil engines should be fine, and a Nikasil today won't degrade with modern gas. BMW had the same issues with the M60 V8. The XJR makes this my second Nikasil engine, no worries.

The timing chain tensioner is simply a design flaw that can cause them to fail and collapse. If that happens the chain can jump, pistons kiss valves, etc. There's an updated design that removes any worry that was incorporated in 2002 (I think), the updated parts can be installed on any of the older V8s. Depending on what you replace "while you're in there" the parts are around $500. My XJR previous owner had the update along with some other PM done at a shop for about $4k.

Forget the Armada Matt, I went all the way and bought a powerstroke Excursion. I love it.

I suggested that, but believe it or not there are vehicles that ARE too big for a housewife. When it comes time for a new vehicle, her Armada might look an awful lot like a Honda Odyssey.

Matt, anymore pictures or details? I normally find the XJS to be awkward looking, but that's freaking sweet!

Thanks Mat! The XJS sans the dorky impact bumpers can be a pretty damn sexy car. And easily found for about $5k with a 300 HP V12. Must.....resist......
