Charles is right - get a strap-on recoil pad or a padded shooting jacket. PAST makes one of the most popular strap-on pads. In addition to mitigating recoil a bit, its suede surface will provide better grip on the rifle or shotgun's butt pad. You will probably find yourself wearing it when shooting the Mini 14 and 10-22 just for that reason.
There are a myriad of reduced recoil 12 gauge loads available. Light one ounce trap loads and the like really go a long ways towards making shooting the shotgun more fun. Most buckshot and slug loads are loaded up pretty stout, as are "goose" or "duck and pheasant" loads. The other thing to do is to simply shoot a lot. Like anything else, you can become more conditioned to recoil. Picking up a short, light 12 gauge loaded with stiff loads is essentially moving right to the head of the line - find some lighter stuff, shoot it a lot, and condition yourself to its recoil. You may never have any reason - or desire - to move up from there. If you do, do so gradually. Learn to read the boxes - all shotgun ammo rates a "dram equivilent" that indicates the powder charge, and the weight of the shot charge. More general classifications are shown on the labels as (in order of both power and recoil) "trap", "upland bird", "duck/pheasant", "goose", "turkey", and finally buckshot or slugs.

Sure recoil pads help, but the most important thing I tell anyone that I let shoot one of my 12ga shotguns is to bury the stock into their shoulder like they mean it! If it is not SOLIDLY planted, it will put the hurt to you. My 100 lb teen daughters have both shot my 12 ga without any sort of recoil pad and they both can deal with it so long as they really pull it hard into their shoulder.

I did not intend it that way, but now that you mention it ...... Just pointing out that it indeed makes a huge difference in the amount of recoil felt.

I'll add to what Tim says by including one's cheek. Plant that cheek firmly on the comb, or face the consequences. The last thing you want is for a heavy kicker to get a running start on you.

Here you go:
FIOCCHI AMMUNITION Trainer Load Shotshells Fiocchi Extra Low Recoil 12 Ga. 2 3/4 7/8 oz, #7 1/2 Fiocchi target loads offer you many choices to suit the shell to your game. The 7/8oz. loads that deliver superior performance with less recoil than a comparable 1-1/8 ounce load. Also, a training load for new or recoil sensitive shooters. Made from hi antimony lead but not designed to funtion semi-auto's. "recoil sensitive shooters" Perfect. I used to have a problem with recoil with a single shot 20 ga. (of course, I was eight at the time). I used a paperback book which really interfered with snap shots. Why doncha try that? [and that is the end of my beating a dead horse]

It wouldn't be prudent.

Todd, if you like the Mini-14, why not give the Mini-Thirty a try as your 7.62 choice?

Check your stance to help accept the recoil with any weapon. Pictures indicate more of a 'back lean'. A recoil pad will help, but placement of the stock firmly against the shoulder, a good stance, and practice with each weapon will help. Many, many years of zeroing(sp) in a scope and goose hunting with 10 and 12 gauges taught me to 'lean in ' just a little bit. (That and my dad). The 870 will 'pop' you if not held correctly, but it is a da*m good gun. (At least the old ones). 10 ga. is another story, but the geese do tend to fall out of the sky.....

heres another trick from us old farts.......................
1) buy 12 pak of barley pops 2) get some ultra-fine lapping compound or valve grinding compound 3) smear some on action bars of 870 4) turn tv on to military channel 5) pop open barley pop 6) RACK ACTION(would be wise if weapon is clear) ABOUT A MILLION TIMES! end result...........a slide action like butter. get 200 rds thru it and it will be broken in. buy chokes for what you wanna do with it. full, improved cylinder, modified, etc. and a choke wrench. hope ya didnt shoot it without chokes???? |

karl..good point. most of the pics i see you leaning back. lean forward, into the shot. this allows your torso, to swing back, and absorb the shock.

So sorry - that's me. I think the reason for my posture is I've just fired - note ejected shell in the air. I happened to be at the same place in late 08. And that's a Garand not a scattergun!
