what is the premise of "pimp my ride"?

i just caught the tail end of the show yesterday. looks like they fixed up an older suburban for some chick. the girl looked familiar...maybe some porn star? (reconized from howard stern, not actual porn).

who pays for the ghetto mods? people nominate their own crappy rides? how are the cars/people picked? this one show, the burb leaked and burned oil. they had to add oil to drive the car away. then right before they gave the car back they had to add more oil. they did thousands of dollars worth of mods, and didnt address the junk motor.

please tell me about the show. dont make me watch it again. i am just curious. the burb came out nasty.

it's all showbiz.

Merchandising, sponsors, licensing, eMpTyV...

West Coast Customs just had the right customer at the right time. They are actually right up the road from Pelican.

Oddly enough—or perhaps not—that show is insanely popular in eastern Europe.

While I am not into that type of customization and creativity, I can respect the work they do -- except for the fact that they don't complete the car - IE: they should really address the mechanical issues with these cars as well.

i've seen acouple where they put gaint rotors and calipers on a truck, and a 350 crate engine into a cutless or something... idk it would be cool if they could pimp my 914..

Take a crappy car, put a bunch of worthless crap on it. Simple premise.

Xzibit finds the owner of a ruined car and takes it to the West Coast Customs for a renovation. They talk up how the owner is a great person and deserves a new car. Think Extreme Home Makeover for kids and cars. It's been on since 2004.

The one thing that I have always noted about this show is that Xzibit can be very witty and articulate at times. Not what you would expect from the typical hip hopper. Probably has contributed to his couple of minor parts in some mainstream films.

I was at a friends house and he made me watch it.

I was surprised to note that:

1. The shop and many of the guys look strangely familiar to the shop and guys on other automobile build shows.

2. The show was about rebuilding a rusted out Cadillac... full new bodywork, paint, interior, wheels...

I don't think they even opened the hood.

There was actually one show where the Nissan Pulsar they picked up was so crappy that they bought the girl a new (2006) Mustang GT and then pimped that with 14 TV screens, etc. They must have a pretty big budget to afford to do that!

I find the show entertaining even if I wouldn't be caught dead in any of the cars post-pimp.

I find a lot of the cars they just take way too far. The paint, wheels, interior etc I can see but when they add a Cotton Candy machine in the guys trunk, taking up the entire trunk WTF?

Remember the one where they installed the huge inflatable movie screen in the guy's trunk?

Another example of possibly going too far.

I can watch those VW commercials a thousand times, and still crack up every time.

They are hilarious!

While I cant stand the "style" of the cars they build. I do appreciate the work and craftsmanship that goes into it. Same for shows such as Coddington's or Chip Foose's. Another good show is "Trick my Truck".
