Probably a VW guy. VW guys can have vastly different definitions of words like 'clean' and 'rusty'. Many think JBWeld, rustoleum and bungie cords are all that are needed to make any air cooled vehicle roadworthy.

But the guy doesn't deserve being mocked. He posted very appropriate pictures and ASKED what the car is worth. Fair enough i say.

Thats an untrue statement. I've had five aircooled VW's and four watercooled. So I guess I'm a "VW guy". There are hacks in every niche car market. Don't label anyone, ALL of my cars have been done right. As well as most of my VW friends. Actually I've found that the vw/audi kids are more into it being correct and clean than most others Stock or modified.

As for the post in question, he boldly misrepresented the condition of the car. Sometimes were too polite on here. Flame on. A better description would have been, "solid project", and yes you're right, he did ask what it's worth. That was his saving grace.

My guess is that some of you folks don't know squat about 914s.
Do any of you actually think that car is only worth $300?

$3000 is a very good deal for that car if the drivetrain is in decent shape.

The speedo goes to 180, that has to be worth AT LEAST $10k.

My only complaint was the use of really, REALLY, clean car. That brings up thoughts of shiny paint, and such.

I have a clean 930 and still daydream about 914's. Missed out owning one twice when I younger. Got in an accident on the ride home after test driving 2 separate 914's 3 years apart from each other. I'm superstitious about them now. I still want one someday though.....

The guy is probably a newcomer around here since he asked for feedback, (on worth/value), on a forum that does not allow replies. I pretty much stopped visiting that section when they did that, it really sucks IMO.

I agree, that is not what I would call really clean, I wouldn't even call it a little clean.
But it appears to be fairly unmolested except for the speakers and seats, and compared to most 914s that are available that haven't been restored it is in very good condition. maybe that's what he meant.

Too many 914s have been neglected, trashed, and mickey-moused to death.
I've seen some that were so rusted the doors wouldn't close right and they were still being driven. Compared to some 914s that one is a garage queen

We used to cut up and scrap 914s that today would be considered nice. I've had three so far, one was my daily driver in high school and college.

I agree with Sammy. (What's the world coming to)?

I also drove a 914 in HS and would love to have another one. The only model that I would be interested in would be a '73/'74 2.0 in original condition. This car is an excellent resto candidate, everything wrong could be easily righted. It needs a complete resto but it would be easy. Expensive, but easy. It still has the original Fuchs and it's a nice original color with the deco (deluxe) trim.

There is another orange one for sale over there that is in great condition but is completely ruined w/ ugly rub-strip trim screwed on the sides so it would need a complete re-paint after removing that stuff and fixing the holes. And the guy wants top-dollar for it. He tried to minimise it by calling it "period correct" but it was only period correct on a Plymouth Duster. I was around back then and trust me, it would have been considered blasphemy by Porsche people. Like putting white-wall tires and curb whiskers on a Ferrari.

As for value, some people here have no clue. Take a WAG what a Speedster in that condition would be worth? If you guessed less than 6-figures, you're eliminated from the game.

While I think we should be gentle to fellow Pelicans, this is not my idea of a 'really, really clean" car.

You can still buy decent 914's for a bargain.

Watch E-bay or Craigslist.

A $3000 914 is going to need very little.

$4000-6000 is a car that has very good paint and needs no mechanical attention.

$6000-8000 is restored.

$10000-12000 are the very rare examples...

Here's my $2200 '74 2.0 that was mechanically sound:

OOOPs, wrong picture!

This is it. I just added the wheels and hood badge ( which some may feel, lowered it value ):

I also added the chrome bumpers and Momo steering wheel from a $300 parts car.

This was five years ago. Now the car is my SIX converted, custom painted, very upgraded suspension, special trans gear sets and full roll caged track car.

Maybe I could get $15000. Maybe.
Only because I am installing a zero mile 2.6 race engine this week...

Just last night I dropped off a '73 2.0 with GT flares and wide wheels, VERY good interior and possibly the best shifting trans ever for $2k.

It needs an accelerator pedal, some fuel injection trouble shooting, a gear shift knob and the brakes rebuilt.

VERY SOLID car. It's going to become a 2.7 SIX conversion track car in the next couple of months.

If you don't like the car don't buy it. Make the guy an offer for what you think it's worth.

Sure he may have used a few better words to discribe the car but give the guy a break. Go to eBay if you want to beat up on sellers, doing it to fellow board members is sorta low IMHO.
