California and Michigan advertising on TV
Anyone else seeing these commercials on TV?
Basically these commercials show all of the "good things" about living in these states, mostly outside activities, etc. California basically claims living there is like a continuous vacation. Michigan highlighted outdoor activities like water skiing. Is this a waste of money or do you think that advertising your state will get people to move there?

Both states are hemoraging taxpayers right now. Both states have high taxes and strong anti-business laws. Both states face impending financial implosion if they can't convince some new suckers to come in and fund the spending orgy.
Both states wouldn't have to advertise if they cut spending, cut taxes, and reduced onerous regulations.

Water ski in Michigan! Register your boat, Pay the park fee to launch the boat, get your trailer license, have your boating license, if you have any money left you might put some gas in the boat, oh make sure you only go one direction on the lake too!

Yeah, California has been advertising forever. Florida and Virginia also have had pretty extensive advertising. I think I've even seen ads for Vermont (easy to see why they need to advertise

Funny how the states that are gaining people don't need to advertise.

I remember seeing states advertising for tourists, but not for residents.
I understand why and what they are attempting to do, but do you think it will be effective? Do any of these advertisements make you want to move?

I think the ads are funny and sad.
Funny because the government of California and Michigan think they might actually work. Sad because it's only a matter of time before Illinois copies California in this pathetic attempt too.

The only commercials I've seen for MI were asking for investment and business relocation. The CA ones have been for tourism. I don't remember ever seeing one for VA. That state needs to shed some residents, if anything. Did people outside NJ see the old commercials in the 80's with Tom Kean on the beach saying, "New Juhsey and you....puhfect togethuh"?

Michigan is in bad shape and it's only going to get worse. We need a governor with crazy bold ideas about luring business to come and stay. We only have a short time before our world class manufacturing talent and infrastructure dissolves.
Granholm has been doing spot fix deals for individual companies and it's just stupid. We need to be thee most welcoming state in the union to business rather than the neck feasting vampires the state has been.

California was experiencing net domestic in-migration (more people moving in to CA than moving out of) until 2007. Since then CA has had net domestic out-migration (more moving out than in). Same thing happened around 1990. Combination of housing bubble (sell expensive CA house and buy cheap TX house, meanwhile no-one could sell the cheap TX and afford an expensive CA house) and recession. Basically a cyclical phenomenon.

You need to look at the demographics of those that have been leaving. For years, those leaving have been young professionals, who are priced out of everything.

My meetings on the east coast last week went very, very well. I can say with virtual certainty that as one of that group, I'm down to my final weeks - if not days - in California myself. When one factors in career opportunity, entrepreneurial incentives, tax structure, housing prices, quality of municipal services (schools, roads, police/fire, etc.) for the tax rate, etc. CA is the pits and is getting its ass handed to it by other, more "traditional" states. You know, the ones that CA likes to scoff at for being "old fashioned" or "outdated". Those ones. I can say with first-hand qualitative (and even some quantitative) knowledge that MA, NH, CT and even NY are whipping CA's ass in these departments right now. Unquestionably. I'm holding out some hope still that there might be some last-minute opportunity that pops up here in CA, but I'm not going to hold onto an outdated and nostalgic dream when I've got very real "bird-in-the-hand" opportunities on the east coast. I'd put my chances of being in CA at the end of July around 5%-10% right now. If that. The opportunities are just SO much better elsewhere there's little reason to stay.

When I moved to CA back in 2001, I went from a mid 50's salary in upstate NY to mid 70's. It was a paycut. When I moved to TX in 2004, I went from mid-80's (120 with bonus) to mid-80's (90 or so with bonus), it was more like a pay increase.
And I was able to pocket the increase in value of my townhouse from 2001-2004
