Auto X car

There is a kid in my apt. building that has a 96 Neon for sale. It pretty chopped up, kid stuff you know, a spoiler and what not. He put a turbo on it and lowered it. I think I could get it ~ 1200 or so. Would make a fun auto X car for the summer... right?

You'd still have to be seen in it. I could find better ways to spend $1200.

My son and I had a ball a couple of years ago running a '95 neon in AX. Who cares what it looks like if you are having fun. I never get "wrapped around the axle" about what I am seen driving, as long as I enjoy what I am driving.

But for $1500 I bet you could do better. CRX, MR2, RX7, 240SX, 200SX, Eclipse, etc. There's lots of '80s Japanese cars with more power and better handling, many of which are RWD.

I'd also be leary of any ricer type car. The cheap ones tend to be serious hack jobs. Do you really want to find out that the hip Ebay "racing seat" is actually held in place with sheetrock screws?

Buddy of mine had a Neon SRT. And he knew how to drive. WELL.

It is a great AX choice.

Buy a go-cart. Probably faster and you'd get more respect for driving it

FWD cars just look ghey. I don't care how well they perform. Big tires on the front look stupid.

Neon SRT is NOT a $1500 Neon.

All better choices (just a quick search):

If you spent more time, you could probably find better cars.

watched a civic si (turbo'd so definitely not stock) at an auto-x last year and it was pretty darned awesome. if i couldn't keep my 911 i'd surely be looking for something like that to auto-x.

neons are definitely tossable little rides too. I'd suggest putting together a comparative price chart for springs, maintenance items, etc for the neon and a few other popular auto-x beaters to see what makes most sense.
