You may like freddie's tone/style a lot better, but range wise Adam is almost on par with the legendary Mr.Mercury.

Mercury had 4 octaves of range...That's a lot of range for a singer
and never had any vocal training

Not sure if Lambert has 4 octaves...

m21sniper 04-09-2009 10:08 AM

Freddie is credited with having 3.5 octave range (i always thought he had 4 octave range too.)

Here's a pretty detailed site that discusses his range:

http://www.f-mercury.com.ar/frames_eng.htm

I looked around for a factual description of Adam's range but didn't see anything. Just a lot of articles with ambiguous phrases like "Adam lambert has huge range."

Just so you know you're in the minority. ;)

Lambert is completely running away with the voting. (there's a link to a tracking site on the last page)

I tend to like big voices. I love a lot of trademark Whitney and Mariah classics even though i don't generally like their genre. I am just a fan of lights out vocalists, of which there is no doubt Adam Lambert is one.

starting to think you fancy the boy a little bit :D

mca 04-09-2009 10:38 AM

The dude is in the same class as Chris Cornell.

His voice is sick ... seriously sick.

futuresoptions 04-09-2009 10:38 AM

The guy definitely has talent that's obvious.. but he is way too polished and has no edge... maybe after he becomes a chain smoker and goes through rehab a couple of times he will have what it takes to produce something other than bubble gum pop... I think that he will have an awesome career as it stands, but he will be no Robert Plant... he'll be more of a Michael Jackson / George Michael type....(Which is cool, but I don't think he could ever lead a serious band)....

Nobody will ever match RP in my book. There may be better vocals out there, but RP will forever be my favorite.

"I am the Highway" would be a great cover for Adam.

I am a huge fan of Chris Cornell he has a great voice...cant seem to agree with his political views though.:(

I agree and disagree.

I think for a pop star, he is extremely edgy. Now of course that is not the same as being rock god edgy, granted. You should check out some of his pre-idol live performances to get a better sense of his wild side. His work in "Wicked" is pretty racy (not my style of music though).

While i agree that i do not see him as the rock band type, i think that as a pop soloist he is legitimately and sufficiently racy enough that he will be seen as credible. AI is getting in the mid 30 millions in votes every week this season, and he has been consistently dominating said voting, so it's a good bet he already has millions of genuine die hard fans. (As have most other previous Idol winners. David Cook- last year's winner has already gone platinum with his 1st post AI album)

I think the artist i would most directly compare Adam Lambert to is Prince.

Prince was one highly successful hard R rated pop-smurf for many years until he went totally over the deep end.

PS: I agree about Robert Plant. I was a loooooooong time Zep Head in my youth. That being said, i would LOVE to hear Lambert cover Immigrant Song, No Quarter, Kashmir, and about a dozen other Led Zep classics.

futuresoptions 04-09-2009 12:26 PM

For some reason, I think that a good singer should be able to bring out pain and suffering into their music.. if this guy tried, I think it would be an epic fail... cause it doesn't look like he has suffered a day in his life... could be wrong, just an assumption, but most singers that I consider GREAT... suffered a little... I really think this guy will be a star..just not in my sky.....;)

American Idol doesn't do it for me. I have a small house and when the wife has it on I can hear it anywhere else in the house. MOST of the performers are like a beautiful women who has on too much make-up. They try to hard to switch up the tones. It's like the people that "sing" the national anthem and RUIN it.

Yes this guy bugs me as well. couldn't he just go back to work at starbucks or wherever guys like him work?

He could, but he is going to have a lot more money when he wins American Idol and you will have to listen to him on the radio. :)

I want to hear him sing the filet o fish song.... gimme back dat fish, gimme that filet o fish. :D

I think where he will be working is 15,000 seat concert halls full of screaming fans.

If you can call that work. Maybe after about 100 or so sold out concerts he will buy a Starbucks or 10 though.
Don't hate man, it's very unbecoming. ;)

Adam would never sing anything about fish.

Cornell is THE MAN! Love everything he does. Just incredible. I love music of all sorts but almost never single out a singer/musician. Cornell is a major exception to that. Really is the greatest thing in a long time.

Snipe i agree this adam dude (fruity tho he may be) is just crazy good. Operating on a whole different plane from most of the others.

And for the record post-zep Plant has been crap. Talk about bubble gum pop, ugh! Cornell is waaaay better than Plant. Could have a lot to do with songwriting though.

stomachmonkey 04-10-2009 07:14 AM

Chris Cornell is my favorite male singer from the current crop.

Adam reminds me more of a Bruce Dickenson (Maiden), or Geoff Tate (Queesnryche).

I think Adam would make an awesome front man for a hard core band. Could see him fronting a band like Iron Maiden.

We really have not seen a guy with a set of pipes and stage presence in a while.

There used to be a slew of em, Tyler, Halford, Dio, Graham Bonnet.

Anyone remember Bonnet? He replaced Dio in Rainbow for one album. Used to hang out with Blackmore and Glover back in the day. They lived in my area and we had mutual friends. Bonnet was a bit of a disco boy appearance wise and every time his hair was just getting to a good length he'd show up for a gig with a haircut which would royally piss off Blackmore.

Just found this, two of my favorite singers, what a great performance.

It's a shame Plant couldn't get Page to keep writing his solo music for him. because you're right, post zep Plant was really weak.

I also really like Chris Cornell. It was a cover of a Cornell Cover of Billy Jean that really won David Cook the competition last year IMO. Most people had never heard Cornell's cover version so thought the TOTALLY slick arragnement was Cook's, even though the little girly man host Ryan Seacrest announced it was a Cornell cover at the beginning.

Here's the Vid. Cook does a great job with it.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/QpX-kndqHnE&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/QpX-kndqHnE&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

This was cook's other shining moment last year, his Rock/alt cover of Mariah Carey:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/DHccueeDFUM&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/DHccueeDFUM&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

The Rock guys for the most part have done extremely well post idol.

STOMACH MONKEY: Never heard of Bonnet but i was a huuuuuuge Dio fan back in the 80s. That man made a few albums that flat out rocked. Last in Line is still one of my favorite metal anthems of all time.
Dickenson was also sensational, my first ever concert was Iron Maiden/Ozzy way back in the day and i still remember getting chills everytime bruce went to his high range.

That dude can flat out sing. I loooove old Iron maiden too. The storytelling and guitar work was just awesome, even besides the fantastic lead vocals. Definitely an all time great metal band.
