Things you find in the trash
Found this on curb the other day, just scattered about next to all the trash bags. Some of the tools have a 60s flavor, radio is probably 70s. Scraper has a price tag still on it, 79 cents.
Just neat old stuff.

I can't tell you how much stuff I've gotten out of the trash. I still poke around now and then. In fact, I pulled what looks to be the base of a shredder out of the alley last night. Nice tall, slim trash can!

The Little Prince case has got to have some value. There are some serious collectors of that Little Prince stuff.

The "little prince" case is a portable radio??? If so, not only little prince collectors...there are collectors of "novelty radios", early transistors, etc. (edit) I see the radio now..inside the brown leather case?
I have a book on collectable early transistor radios...give me better pics, brand name, model # if you can find any, etc. Maybe I can give you a guestimate. It's crazy...wish I hadn't dropped the old Toshiba I had as a kid. Most aren't worth much, other than their novelty factor...but if you hit the right model? $$$$.

Wouldn't have brought this up, but being as we're talking trash....
I noticed a Kirby vacuum and attachments out on trash night a few blocks from home. So I took it home, invested $58, got it running, polished the chrome, and sold it for $175 on craigslist to the first guy that stopped by. Now I'm an unofficial Kirby refurbisher. lol |

I was walking along in Brookline, MA one day. Some guys were cleaning out an appartment, looked like an old person had died. There were boxes and boxes of vintage Lionel trains! I was out for a walk, but I stopped and called a cab and brought it all home. Brought a pretty penny on E-bay.

Looks like a Zenith Royal 185. "Verical, plastic, left front vertical slide rule dial over large perforated grill area with upper right logo. two right side thumbwheel knobs, AM, battery."
Value given was $30...sorry, you didn't hit the jackpot. But to keep in mind, my reference book is a 1994 edition...so values up since then. Old treasures...fun stuff. Oh, book didn't give a date on this one, but I'd guess mid 1960's...9V battery powered. Did you check to see if it still plays? Like I said...fun...

my last customer was throwing out a 40something inch Toshiba bigscreen. it just quit working one day and he bought a new one. brought it home, took off the back, blew out the dust, checked the fuses and Voila! I got me a big screen tv! I furnished most of our old wine shop from throw aways picked up here and there. I've acquired tools, appliances, furniture, boats/motors and even vehicles like this.

I found thousands of dollars worth of stuff one day in the US Coast Guard dumpster. A cutter was being reassigned to another location and they just threw away all the stuff that they didn't want to carry on board the cutter. Tools, pumps, engine parts, band-it tools, gear/wheel pullers etc... Filled up the back of my pick-up truck!

Holy Krap, John...That a Catalin plastic radio? Some confuse it with Bakalite...but catalin was smoother. Anyway, it seems the Bendix is the least valuable of the Catalin radios, but I think it's deco style is wayyy cool! Do you have a model number? A 1992 book I have places the value (mint..I'm afraid) at anywhere between $65 and $275. Who knows what a collector would pay today.
Shine that puppy up and enjoy! Oh...made late '40's, depending on the model. Who knows? This may have been the radio that was on when Marilyn Monroe posed for "the" calendar photo...a leering reporter once asked: "Did you have anything on when that photo was taken?" She replied: "The Radio."... I was kind of "into" radios for a spell...probably an only child syndrome thing...my old 5 tube radio was a dear friend to me... I know a guy who was driving through an alley once and spotted a guitar neck poking out of a dumpster, He stopped to check it out and grabbed the guitar.
Turned out, it was a vintage instrument. worth about $8000 at the time. Gretsch or Rickenbacher, I forget which.
