Have you ever........

had to swim out of a car?

It came to my attention at lunch today that some of my vehicular experiences are not shared by the general public. So what's the craziest thing you've ever done in a car?

Drove it through a tunnel while it was bursting into flames.

Long story.

Nice!!!

My friend was driving his thoroughly abused GTI down a dirt road at about 70 with me in the passenger seat and realized a bit too late that the road ended in a boat ramp into the Suwannee.
Things I learned that night:
Airbags in VW's don't deploy when you hit water.
Sometimes having the windows down pays off.
Cops will breathalyze you every 5 minutes if you drive your car into a river and try multiple breathalyzer units.
Tow truck drivers are NOT willing to dive in order to hook up a car.

I am alive today because, many times, the car wanted to survive, not because of my great driving ability.

I was taking a private track day lesson and slid off the track. I recovered and drove back with no damage. When I got to the pits the instructor looked at me shaking his head and said: "Well, at least you were listening to me when I explained what to do if you did go off track, now if you would have listened to that 'turn-in point and apex' stuff we would be on to something."

A local sheriff did the same thing in a pursuit. No joke.

In HS, had some friends riding on the down tailgate of my truck while duck hunting.

I gassed it to catch up to some ducks in a grassy knoll when I hit a small ditch hidden in the scrub
and the 2 friends riding backwards on the tailgate flew about 12 ft in the air as the back end of the
truck dipped in and flew out of the ditch.

I still have that image in my head of my friends 12 ft in the air, backs to the ground, 12 gauge
shotguns in arms, impacting the ground from my rear view mirror!

Not to start a religious string, but God looks after drunks and idiots (we all survived)

Somewhere on this board there is a photo of a 1978 VW Rabbit with the bumper sticking out of the water. The car is still there today.

The tale gate story reminds me of...

Was driving my Corvette convertible, with the removable hard top on it, to my girlfriends house. Went over a rise of an intersection at about 45mph and the top blew off. I remember looking in the rear view mirror at the top slowly rotating about 30ft off the ground.

I was sad because it was the only top I had for the car, the canvas top had died years ago and I didnt want to get wet next rain storm, but dang it looked cool just hanging in the air like that.

Same friend and car: at the time we both managed a pizza joint. We closed up one night and decided to grab a few cases of beer for the crew after a particularly gruesome night. One thing led to another, I stole his car, pulled it up onto the sidewalk and did burn outs up and down in front of the store until there were solid lines the entire length. The owner came in the next morning for a mgmt meeting, looked at the tire marks, looked at us and said 'you idiots have got to stop drinking' and went about business as usual.
I did eventually stop drinking.......

I blew the sunroof out of a car doing 80 once, on purpose; long story; went down a lot like that scene in "The Fast and the Furious".

Also nose dived my toyota off an steep hill over the edge of a curve which ended in the car almost at it's tipping point on it's nose, and me hanging from my seatbelt like a parachute harness. I opened the coor which slammed open, unclipped my belts, and literally fell out of the car.

Two scariest moments in my life.

1) Sliding upside down in a Jetta at 65 mph, leaves shooting in at me, until we hit a tree, reaching up to undo my seatbelt and crawling out where the windshield had been.

2) Riding as a passenger at 330 km/hr. in a Ruf RGT on a country road, not the Autobahn, near Pfaffenhausen.

Both times I needed a change of shorts and a smoke after I walked away.

For the record - a 951 WILL hit 18 psi of boost in reverse gear before hitting redline. There is no "boost lockout" when reverse is selected.

Don't ask.

Went into a river on a Honda CB750. Had it down to almost 45 when the earth ended and the water began. What saved me was a drop of about 10 feet. Gave me time to push the bike away.

The guy behind me did exactly the same thing.

Metal grated swing bridge, 90 degree turn, no guard rail, levee road, 15 minutes after a car had burst a radiator hose on those metal plates.

Like I said in another thread, have no idea how I survived childhood without all the protections of the modern day world.

Did anyone give you the essential: "Who's the u-boat commander?"

360 in my girlfriend's corvette at 75mph on I-45 and it was dry! She was not impressed. We switched seats and she took it up to about 120 and passed everyone who saw my maneuver.

Where to start...well, the biggest rush I've EVER had was a (successful) high speed police chase. Was high for four hours on adrenaline and was sick after it wore off.

If a tree falls in the woods, will I be driving on the mountain road underneath it during that split second that it falls?

(I was...)
