have a hard time seeing a house cat kill a healthy rabbit. i remember the neighbors collie getting mauled after he cornered one. those things can be tough.

Thoughts?
.22CBs, a bolt action rifle, and a scope.

Your problem will be gone very soon.

the housecat is pound for pound the strongest animal there is...
My oldest one is 11 lbs, Bubba, 4 years old, and in his peak.

I've seen him fight other cat's... he slam tackles them and bites pretty much like the bigger ones do in Africa...scary stuff, don't want him after me, i'm sure he could mess up my pretty face
Have no doubt, that he can snuff a non domestic (eg fat, oversized) wabbit

The above specimen (european wabbit) brought in last week was about 5 lbs, which is close to fully grown up... they don't get much bigger around here in the wild... maybe 7 lbs.

Were not talking 20 lbs domestic Flemish Giants here

Rabbit is good eating. Four hindquarters go for $20 at the local butcher. You have any foodie friends?

summer is rapidly approaching. i believe the parasites increase in numbers. you have the check the liver for spots(?). get the silent pellet rifle from CAMO. plenty of power to brain a bunny. sounds like fun. if you didnt live so far, i would fly over to do the wet work for you.

The laws in Illinois are funny. I'd have to get a hunting permit to eat them and I wouldn't be able to hunt on my property (must have a minimum of 40 acres to hunt on in Illinois). The DNR would have a field day fining me for poaching and illegal hunting.

HOWEVER, I can legally dispose of "pests". The DNR officer at my hunting safety class explained that any animal that is not protected can be a "pest", but that I can't eat a "pest" if I don't want to be prosecuted for poaching.

So I can shoot the rabbits, but I can't eat them.

I think it will also have to be with a pellet gun so as not to run into the whole "discharging a firearm within city limits" thing.

+1 recommendation, although it is "Gamo". There are also some aftermarket mods for Gamo's that can make a really slick shooter.

Google "Gamo Whisper .22"

You can use subsonic .22LR rounds for such things - they're shockingly quiet. I have a stash of them on hand for... um... "tactical" situations that might arise.

A wrist rocket is pretty quiet and shouldn't cause anyone to call the police. Not many mass postal murders committed with slingshots. If you have a solid fence around yard, i.e. safety plus privacy, I think gunning for rabbits would be a lot of fun. As for the illegality of eating said rabbit, hey, it can't be a capital offense.

Two more factors.

I have a chain-link fence (that belongs to various neighbors--none of it is mine) around my back yard.

Next door neighbor is a cop. Don't get me wrong, he's a cool guy, but I don't want to do something that puts him in a difficult position.

Oh. That makes it more difficult. Maybe you'll have to borrow a neighbor's dog.
