a good Lab/dog is a tired dog..
I have 2 destroyers..Sam 2yr & Jack 1yr Lab's.
crate trng. is good..but when you release them..
they MUST release all that dog-power..
you come home..out of the box.and what ...
our routine..both of us up 5 /out the door 530 back 630..fast pace
first one home /change and within 30 minutes out the door, again at least 1 hr...
rain or shine..7 days.
good for the dogs..great for her legs and butt..and monthly ...

for the dog that is. You need to get a handle on the pup and do keep her penned up when she's unsupervised. Look up the two words above online and read about how this is done. It will really help your sanity.

Cheers,

No offense but the dog is crate trained.

This is just a young lab thing. Anyone who has ever had a lab puppy knows they chew on anything in sight for about the first 2 years.

the Lab. thing..how true...
which I did not know, and no-one warned me about..
both of mine are rescues..
sadly most Lab. owners never tell the newbie these tails of horror...
one always see's the cute little fat puppies and a mellow dog..
never the 4 legged spawn of satan..
that hopefully someday turns mellow..
Sam is almost mellow, Jack..1 yr or more to go,
I think he's getting crack from my Mom..

Fill up bathtub. Add candles and bubble bath. Put wife in tub, tell her she deserves to have some relaxation time. Now sneak out into the garage, and change the oil. All weekend. Then it will all be better.

brain mapping suggests that while we sleep our logic center is switched off/to 'low' (explaining why our dreams are all over the map.)

Now that begs another Q about logic center working/nonworking intervals ... but who would dare want to bring that up?

I guess I am quite lucky, my wife gets a little more passive/aggressive during that special time but not much else.

Personally when I hear women at work or female friends believing that their hormonal cycle somehow gives them permission to behave badly I just want to tell them to suck it up and control themselves. I have had women who lit off in a meeting and then believe that "PMS" was sufficient justification and thus no apology was required. My commentary was that if women in senior positions could not exert sufficient self control to at least not lose it in a meeting or find a way to exit less gracelessly, then perhaps the chauvinists are right.....and women do not belong in business.

I am now exiting this room, and seeking protection from what I am sure is a firestorm of indignation....run Dennis, run!!!!

No offense, but the point of crate training is that the dog is in its crate when not directly supervised. It could be in a outside kennel as well. Just saying - it will take the stress out of puppy dog ownership. Of course it has to be done right - with plenty of supervised time / exercise outside the crate ...

With 3 kids at home and me working, the amount of time the dog would be able to be "directly supervised" outside would be about 45 minutes a day.

I choose to allow my dog to be outside more than that. It really isn't an issue unless you leave something destructible on the deck.

I am going to try the suggestion above and do more walks. Maybe tiring her out will do her some good and I'll get my cardio in at the same time.

Honestly, unless you have had a lab puppy before you cannot understand how much they chew. Labs are orally fixated dogs, they were bred that way so they would be great retrievers and love having things in their mouths. Check on any lab forum and you will find numerous threads about chewing lab puppies. It just happens. The key is to minimize the destruction as much as possible and wait it out. The behavior usually disappears by the age of 2 and then you have a fabulous dog for the next 10 years.

hear ya Rick,
I have had Rotts, GS and any number of mutants in between..
they were all perfect compared to a growing Lab..
SAM..folks he ate a hole into the bathroom wall,
2 couches, has incredible landscaping skills, a rug,
brings back stuff I did not know I owned ,or on my property..
left the lawnmover out..my fault...
Jack removed 2 wheels, well he resized them for sure.
that said..I'm nuts ..cause I wouldn't give them away..
Love them.

Rick, walk him..do you both a world of good

Rika

oh just remembered this..
you know that stuff they put under carpets..foam,dark...
found some the other day..
folks all of downstairs is hardwood..
upstairs..well I'm going up next week..
no need to scream today..besides ..
we wanted wood up there someday..
it's coming..

I have had a pup that would eat anything in site. I know how it goes. Tiring them out will only help for like 10 minutes. But spending more time with them is always good. Even if you had Irish twins, the oldest of your kids should be ready to be hauled to the local playground and back, taking the dog along ...

Good Luck!

George

As we all know, when aunt flo is coming to visit, it's best to run and hide.

Because then it's just ALL CRAZY ALL THE TIME, but it's easier to get used to. Like if you live across the street from a fire station.
