kaisen - Per your original post, "...swapping an engine that's worth more than double the vehicle ..." that lead me to believe you thought a Supra engine would run you close to $3k. Hence my reply you don't know what the fawk you're talking about. I'll agree to your $4k price, if you're a "need to have it all now " type and not willing to shop around for the right deal. Keep in mind, Shaun mentioned the engine swap idea, not me. I don’t think Shaun’s intent was to validate whether or not an engine swap on a $1500 car was a wise economic decision. I can think of very few examples of where this is true, especially on a daily driver.

However, to prove my point, before I moved from Boston , I had all of the parts needed to swap a 7MGTE into my 85 4Runner. I had everything from the wiring harness to the exhaust and had less than $1000 into it. That included an upgraded turbo, LS400 injectors and AFM, not to mention a Supra transmission w/ a new Center Force clutch I could sell. I actually had the entire car, but gave away everything else. I ended up moving to the West Coast and sold/gave away everything for the swap before I did the install. Granted, that was 7 years ago, so figure around $1500 today.

I'm also curious as to why you think the Supra engine is so much heavier than the 3VZE engine (or even a 22RE for that matter)? I can assure you, it's a lighter engine than the common Chevy small block swaps I've seen. And none of those trucks tend to be "nose-heavy".

You are correct, you didn't bring up age, but your "werd or yo" comments tend to imply that I am of the younger ebonics generation. Re-reading my original post, the only ebonicesque word I used was "boost." I am proud to say that I am an ebonically challenged individual, hence, I used the word with its original Queen's English meaning:

When you’re ready to do the engine swap, let me know and I can put you in touch with some Toyota guys in your area.

Made a little more progress this week and yesterday. Fixed the gas tank and got it back in, installed a new exhaust, put the driver quarter on and laid Fat Mat down in the bed in prep for gluing down new carpet I got ages ago. Just laid it in so it starts to soften out the packing creases.

Drove it around yesterday and will put some highway miles on it today. So glad I put the Fat Mat down, makes a huge difference, and it's turning out to be a nice truck. Best part is it passed inspection! It's all downhill here from here.

Paul, Fat Mat is the cheapest of all deadeners, I got mine on eBay. Given what it did to the truck, it'll turn your 964 into a Bentley.

Thanks Rick, but if I were really an over achiever, would I be "restoring" an old junk 4Runner? LOL!

That would be worth it depending on how much you had to modify (both in $ and time) to get it in the truck.

Just spent 4 hours in it, in the rain, very happy I decided to fix it. Would love to get some 17s for it with decent all season/summer tires and keep the Michelins for winter.
