Law Enforcement ?

Is it normal for the police to ask for you social security number?

I call the local police about an intoxicated patron in my restaurant. After he arrested her he asked me for my name, social, dob, and address. I gave him my drivers license number and he ran my license to try and get my social. He did all of this over the police radio, he gave my DOB, drivers license number, my address and wanted my social.

Is this crazy or is it me?

It is supposed to be illegal to use our SSN's for anything outside of business involving the Social Security Administration. It's supposed to be illegal to even ask for it.

"Supposed to be" and "is" are two different things. Here in Washington, for example, the Department of Fish and Wildlife asks for it when purchasing a hunting or fishing license, obstensibly to track "deadbeat dads" that have skipped out on child support payments. Apparently, that must free up more time to hunt and fish...

Your SSN has already become a defacto lifetime serial number, used for tracking virtually everything you do. I'm surprised we don't have to get it tattooed somewhere, and a microchip injected with it coded. For our "safety", don'tcha know...

I was watching an episode of COPS where they pulled someone over, and digitally erased out the guy's license plate, but didn't alter the audio where the cop calls in the the plate over the radio...

Give that number to any cop and you'll likely be adding identity theft to the ticket you were going to get.

I would never give out my SS# to anyone who was not legally entitled to it. I'd love to get arrested for not providing my SS# to a cop. Couldn't wait to see the penal code for that.

I recall a time when if you were writing a check for almost anything the store would require your SS# as part of the process or they wouldn't take your check.

I am not an attorney and I did not even sleep at Holiday Inn recently but.....

My understanding is the ONLY places that you MUST give your SSN to is your employer and your bank. Any other request you can deny. I recently went to my Dr.s office and they asked me again, I told them it was 555-55-5555. That was enough to keep the billing computer happy, as if I care.

I was not the one in trouble. I am the one that called to police to have the drunk removed.

Why would the police broadcast all of a persons personal information over the radio.

I agree with the rest, My SSN never gets given out and NO; the cops have no reason to even ask for it, that's what the drivers lic is for.

Same here and totally agree.

Our frigging "Sheriff Joe Arpaio" here in Phoenix tried for several months to do a DNA test on anyone pulled over or stopped for ANYTHING.

It was finally ruled as illegal and all data expunged from the system. Look up the Social Security Admin rules and the SSN is never supposed to be used for any identification purposes.

Right
Just like the deleted juvenile records that they always mention in detail when you're an adult.

Are you sure? You own/manage a place where someone was sold alcohol until they were inebriated, and the police were called.

Are you *sure* you're not getting in trouble?

Do this:

When he asks for it - refuse. If he persists, THEN say "Why don't you try 567-68-0515?"

You will have an iron-tight defense - be SURE to record the conversation for your lawyer to use as evidence.
