cherries, that's all focker ("are you a pot head focker?" reference). bought a cherry tree knowing that it took two to tango with the cross-pollenation deal. there are a few in the hood i know of but after reading my western gardening book i found you needed specific types to get the cross pollenation right.

the tree i got is four different types of cherry graft onto a single stock. each of the four offs the main trunk was a different variety of cherry according to the way they were tagged & paint color coded. did not figure that out til i got home and it was in the groundconfused:... do you suppose that since there will be four different strains in this same tree it might provide the cross pollenation i need? of the four varieties one according to the gardening book is a "self pollinator" so maybe this helps my cause?

a shot of the grapes, orange, nectren & new kidd on the block..

any hayseed's out there know a lick about what hopefully will some day be a SWEET producer...

I don't know anything about cherry trees. Aren't they supposed to freeze in order to produce?

Anyway, love the yard with no grass. I'm getting there little by little.

Craig's Crimson is a self pollinating sweet cherry, this means it does not need another tree. I have one in my back yard and it produces the best tasting cherries I ever had. The birds cleaned me out last year, ate all of them, hot tip Hang mylar strips on tree, when they flutter in the breeze, I am told the tree looks like it is on fire to the birds.

Fairly certain if the 4 in one tree has strains that can pollinate each other, you should be all good. I have heard that those 4 in one trees sometimes lose part and grow into a single strain tree. Now for some bad news....

many nectarines need another nectarine or peach to produce, sorry dude

Spray with the copper based fungicide three times a year, cherries are prone to borers here in norcal, keep that in mind too

Sacramento for me, San Jose for the other Toby, as I recall.

Oregon is blueberry heaven man, cherries grow pretty good up there too, as I recall

Looking at the pic, you may have buried the root graft...like a "hump" where the main trunk was grafted to the root stock.

Gotta keep that above the soil level...If not, the top will die, and the root stock tree will take over. Most tasty fruit trees are grafted to a non tasty root stock...

Check that planting depth!

That said, most of the "fruit basket" (different varieties on the same tree) do pollinize themselves, assuming the grower knew what he was doing.

Check that planting depth! I don't see the graft line...even a bark dust surround like yours will do the bad thing...

good catch, I did not notice that planted too deep thing, though I think the multi graft ones have the various flavors grafted onto the root stock, so it goes up a lot higher than normal

Also you want to be certain you don't get any stuff growing below all the grafted stuff, or they tend to die off and all you get is whatever they are grafted to, not what you want

Yep, Cherries grow well up here...the two main pests are cherry fruit fly, which grows it's larvae stage inside the cherries...and Starlings gobble 'em up. All stone fruits can have bark boring insect problems as well...

Yummy,
I'm so envious of your guys soil, so fertile and soft. My in-laws live in the Bay Area and they have the most beautiful Roses I have ever seen. If you can get a shovel one inch in the ground without hitting a rock around here, you're lucky.

there was some "days below 45*" requirement on the tags but nothing i don't think can be met here a valley over from the coast. i am actually in sunnyvale where it used to be just about all cherry orchards, the olsen farm. in fact up until about 5 years ago (heart of the real estate boom) there were still about 20 acres of cherry orchards in the middle of town, right off the el camino. now only about 3 or 4 remain adjacent to a city park, the other 15 is apartments & condos now. sad really.

the nectarine is solo but has produced fruit the last couple years. problem there is the fruit is very small and has tainted skin. there is like brown, rough patches on them. i just eat around them i will try to post some pics later today when i return home to see if you guys have a take on that.

the shots were taken just after adding the redwood compost & i have spead it better since getting it off the stock all together. there is a 5-6" deep basin around each tree & vine so the base of the stock actually shows a few spindly roots at surface per the western gardening book direction.

if like the grapes, the one you see is second generation from the originals out front on a fence it will take me a few seasons to dial my crops in.

yeah milt, aint no sense in a lawn out back with the dog doin his business out there on it. just keep the weeds down with round up and close the windows on windy days as to not dust up the house

thanks for the time in pointing out me with some pointers.

Brown on the nectarines is probably fungus, I had that a year or two ago. Was more diligent with my Copper Sulfate spraying and cleaning up leave litter and it is much better. I would have though it would have impacted the leaves more, with that peach leaf curl thing, but they look pretty good.

I always like to put a cap on a 3 foot piece of pvc pipe, drill some holes and bury it with about 6-8 inches sticking out of the ground when I plant the tree, facilitates deep watering. Get yourself a good book on pruning, it makes a pretty big difference in how your trees produce.
