I own too many cars...
You ever see a car for sale and just go nuts thinking "I need that. I can afford that. I should do it."
Man I hate it some times. I just found this awesome old '84 VW rabbit on Craigslist for sale uuber cheap that I really, really want. I have a friend with an 86 GTI that is freaking amazing (after her put a lot of money and time into it admittedly) and this 84 rabbit is the same 1.8 CIS injected motor and body shell as his GTI. I don't know the differences but I'm guessing it's in the brakes and suspension. Anyways... It's cheap enough to where it's almost a disposable amount of money, but things are pretty tight right now as I need a new clutch in my one Porsche and the other Porsche needs a few hundred to get running still as it sits on 4 jackstands awaiting drivetrain reinstall. And my current daily driver is a 89 Toyota Corolla sport coupe which is a wonderful car and runs like a top, and I don't have a real reason to sell such a good running car that is paid for. Adding a fourth car to the stable just doesn't work out financially or physically as I am out of room to put cars and parts. I store the Porsches at my father's farm and he would be increasingly annoyed if I showed up with another car to park there. Limitations of street parking here. But man I really..... reallly wanna go look at this. I'm giving the guy a call in the morning.

Well yeah, my wife thinks I have too many! ...and she may be right... but a Mk1 GTI is pretty cool.

Is it actually a GTi? Or just a black Rabbit? Can't tell from the pic.
A Mk I GTi is very cool, I agree, and I would make room for one - replace the Toyota if need be. But I wouldn't do that for just a black Rabbit.

It is a GTI. I didn't mention that in my post. It's an 84 and my friend's is an 86. I don't know the differences between years but they look the same. I'm patiently waiting till later this morning to give this guy a call. Hopefully it isn't sold yet. Even if I don't muster up the courage to buy it, I can convince my friend into picking it up I bet. I'd say like 8:30 or 9AM is a reasonable time to call right? Most working class people are up by then right? oh man I can't wait. I have wanted one of these for years.

Its been lowered and bumpers removed, still sitting on the factory 14" GTI rims - cool. Hopefully not beat up too bad, alot of these cars havre had hard lives through the many owners over the decades.

Those were fun cars. Pretty sure 83-84 were the original bodies and 85+ were different (at least externally....)

What is this talk of owning "too many" cars (or other motorized toys for that matter)? I do not understand the premise.

My friend Ron who owns the '86 GTI knows of the seller, he's a young guy but owns 2 other VW's. The car is on some stiffer lowering springs which looks fun. I'm just aside on weather or not it would be wiser to pass this up and spend the money getting my two other toys in better order: My one 924S needs it's rubber clutch replaced and the other 924S needs new rotors and tires and seats before it drives. hrrrm...

At last count I've had 77 different cars. The 1.8 is a good motor. The 5 speed tranny is ok.
The shifting linkage will probably need to be rebuilt, but it's easy. The fuse box and fuel pump relays can be a problem. Working on these in comparison to a Porsche is a piece of cake. Parts are cheap. There is no such thing of having to many cars. Regards p930man |

The low cost of ownership is what I know would make this a fun toy.
When my friend bought his mk2, he owned it for a week before we pulled the engine and trans and rebuilt everything. The entire rebuild, including clutch, cost him around $500.

Because it seems like such a good deal to pass up on...
Even if I dry dock one now and save it till later when I either sell another off or have the time to fix them... it will still be fun for a while. Hell even if this GTI is just a summer car that I ditch by September... I could probably fix a few small things on it over the summer and sell it for more that I buy it for..

A GTi would be really nice. Those were/are great little cars. Don't know what your daily driving/commute is like but I'd rather drive a GTi than an '89 Toyota.
If (1) it is a really nice GTi (2) at a very good price (3) with A/C, and push came to shove, I would buy the GTi, make sure it is reliable, then sell the daily driver Toyota and use the $ to get both 924s running. Voila, go from 1 running/2 busted to 3 running/0 busted. But in MO I'd want A/C in a daily driver.
