It was probably a salvage 924 or a car with a blown engine.

I like Gogar's explanation. Actually tho, drag racers discovered long ago that the closer rear tires are together, the easier it is to track straight down the 1/4 mile.

I've seen Vegas done in pretty much the same manner...a fun ride if 1/4 mile is your thing. The 924, being about as worthless as a Vega, is an ideal candidate...similar body styles and weight.
