Why is it okay to be rude to people on forums?

It really annoys me when people say what ever they want behind the safety of their computer.

Reminds me of the VWVortex... Wankers like that were a deciding factor in selling my Corrado. I decided that if I was going to have another german car I wanted one that I could ask questions about....

I was acosted on the 'tex for putting the factory outlet back on the supercharger instead of the like $80 upgraded one from BBM...

I don't post very often on the MazdaSpeed forums because of the prevalence of rude posts. Besides, I'm the oldest guy on that board. I do not believe it's ever acceptable to be rude to people, in person or online. Heck, I found my job through a contact here on this board (Kach22i) and we have become friends, even though we don't always agree on things from a political perspective. You can disagree with people without being rude. It's easy to be rude, it takes effort to rise above poor manners and behavior. You never know who you might meet or offend and how it may effect you. Treat everyone as if they are your boss (never mind that last one!).

Believe me I'm far from PC.

However, I was looking for help on a serious problem ($ 2,800 possibly) with my A6 and the jack off calls me disrespectfully because I didn't post my car info (which wasn't even relevent to the problem)????

It just annoyed me. And I needed to vent...here.

Well, he wasn't being helpful, but it wasn't really rude either IMO. It was a bit wankerish to say that you were being disrespectful. Posing a question on a forum without proper detail is a bit wankerish too, but often the folks doing it don't know enough to know that.

My guess is the guy was having a bad day. He wasn't bad enough to get excited about. If he'd called you a name or flamed you, then... His post was 99% matter of fact. It's hard to judge based on text because facial expression and tone generally aren't conveyed.

Relax. Don't worry about it unless the guy calls you a name or goes on a tirade.

Same reason it's okay to be rude behind the wheel of a car. Because you can. America is the "get what you can" nation. The "Me First" culture.

I often wonder if those who are rude and obnoxious and talk tough talk on forums are really like this in person, or are they just suddenly brazen behind the safety of their computer monitor.
I try not to be rude in general. Life is too short.

In some instances, a person's online personality and his in-person personality can be like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Spooky. At least one person here is like that.

I can see why you were annoyed. And I'll congratulate you for showing considerable restraint.
It's like walking into a specialty shop of any kind and being made to feel "less than" because you don't belong to the right clique. Never understood the mentality.

It is the same reason, but that is not it.

It is because in a car or on a forum, they are dehumanized. Driving, it is that "GD Prius that cut me off," not "the old lady in the Prius." Here it is, that "drunken fool dipso," that "pillow biter norm" or that "right wing wack job tobra."

If you don't see the person, literally, it is easier not to see that there is a person.
