Is it out or not, the engine???
Last time I checked, it was out, up until now I didn't need any more tools.

Gravity did that.

And I'm sure I can do a lot of the disassembling with that same set of sockets and wrenches...

doubt it.

Now you go and verify whether you can use my old P/C's, I'll sell them to you, cheap. (P/C do come as a set, if you only need cylinders, that's ok, but the price stays the same :D )

Can't use em at 95mm, need the 97mm to match my heads.
Which also means i'll need custom pistons, as the only ones in existance by Mahle, are the stock 3.3 turbo P&C's , those have a compression ratio that's just way to low for my purposes.

That's too bad. No way of machining your heads to accept 95mm barrels? If not, it is gonna cost some bucks... (My P/C's would cost you only 500 euros)
New P/C's, pfffff, expensive, my 3.4 P/C will cost me little over 3 grand.
What are you going to do, Mahle barrels and custom pistons??? (maybe not the best option.)
Wossner barrels, custom pistons or LN's Nickies and JE pistons? We have a local importer in Lier (Karrera.net)
Wossner I can most likely get a good deal on through my friend/mechanic.

Mornin guys,

That autocross was fun but cold. Sid, thanks for the video. Please send me the one shot from my car window.

porsche4life 01-11-2010 05:25 AM

I'll send it to ya as soon as I get it... That was my buddies camera....

svandamme 01-11-2010 05:46 AM

not sure yet, Peter thinks there are some bad stories related to Woessner. (they don't make barrels do they, just pistons for Mahle barrels?)
Mahle & JE pistons , same thing
Mahle & Mahle.. there's no combination that works for my purposes
Nickies & JE pistons... expensive (import from US) and also very "alternative"...

There's also Helmut Wahl, who used to work for Mahle, and now has a custom Piston Job shop in Stuttgart, he's using Mahle blanks

Either way, it's an odd combination, short stroke, big bore , old conrods, big head...
I'll need to get something made custom.. that's for sure and making the customisation at the piston seems to be the most complete way of doing it.
I specify the bore, the valve pockets, the wrist size, the shape, exact compression and other tidbits... and that's what i get.

I'll sleep on it, many times before i make the call. i'll select the barrels last , along with the cam and mfi rebuild/tune.

When comparing, i think they will all compare reasonably well, some a bit more expensive then others.. and if i send in the barrels to the piston manufacturer, so he can make the pistons for those specific barrels..
eg, not buying pistons with an email saying ,
"i want 97mm pistons", but instead give them the barrels, and let them measure and spec the piston as it should be

i think manufacturing defect would probably be less of a big issue that way and it will boil down to having a small percentage of bad luck, or not.
and that percentage is not that variable for either of the manufacturers out there... Else they would not be in business that long...

Will probably gather cash for a chassis first of all... that would be a big jump towards closing the parts gap and depending on the chassis i get, i'll get parts along with it... either usable parts or stuff i can resell. It's no use getting everything in parts, only to come to the conclusion that the chassis i buy has a large number of those parts in it... and i payed to much for the individual parts i don't need.

Geronimo '74 01-11-2010 06:32 AM

You're right Wossner only makes pistons apparently.
I would look into the prices of Nickies and JE pistons, they're not that expensive. Not more so than Mahle. And the make a set according to you specs.
Surf to Karrera.net and give that guy a call, he's very friendly (it's a Dutch guy but you're used to them...)
In the current economical climate, exchange rates are in your favor. I would at least check it out.
On the tech board are a few guys that have nothing but good things to say about those P/C's.

svandamme 01-11-2010 06:59 AM

i still prefer mahle, i'de only go for Nickies if i can't find a custom piston that comes with a good rep..

Wahl is supposedly 240 euro / piston... They use Mahle pistons, that's Mahle/Mahle, no worries about thermal expansion , the pistons were forged for use with those barrels.... that means a lot to me

porsche4life 01-11-2010 07:08 AM

I love cancelled classes.. :D

GH85Carrera 01-11-2010 07:43 AM

Sid, it looks like post 6K is coming.

porsche4life 01-11-2010 07:46 AM

It is coming very soon... Gotta find something good.....

Wading through the parts catalogs right now to find all the parts to fix this weekend... Got the heater core... thats setting me back $80... Now if I could find the part # on those bolts again....

BRPORSCHE 01-11-2010 08:45 AM

Stijn,

I have been looking at eurostar and I can do london to AMS round trip in 4 hrs for 89 Euro roundtrip. I am wondering can I do this overnight? Sleep(drink) on the train then just wake up in AMS? I have family in London and Harlamm and I am staying with them. Trying to keep the whole trip under $700 for a week.

svandamme 01-11-2010 09:18 AM

Tom, you have the Eurostar website? then you know all i know about it.
I always drive when i go to the UK...

BRPORSCHE 01-11-2010 09:29 AM

You said you heard delays with the eurostar being unreliable? Thats the last thing I want during this trip.

Geronimo '74 01-11-2010 10:13 AM

Tom,

the last few weeks have been difficult due to technical problems and weather...
Some trips being cancelled and all.
Be sure to be informed before you leave, I don't know if the situation is already back to normal.
Maybe a plane is a better option...

BRPORSCHE 01-11-2010 10:29 AM

Geronimo,
I have thougt about something like ryanair but their website blows. Tough to navigate through.

The other plus side witht he train is that I can just get off at a stop and then get back on. I might want to stop and get a beer with you!
