what is it you are doing?

I read up on Wiki and realized it should work. In all my IT years, I have stayed away from Mac and if I burned ISO's, they were for Windows, in Windows or Linux, in Linux..

I'm well aware of how applications are OS specific.. ;) Short of running emulation SW..

I'm trying to get Snow Leopard to install on a Intel 945gclf2d Atom MB. I have a feeling the SL DVD I bought the other day has the 10.6.2 kernel, which they dropped Atom support.

Last night, I had managed to mount the SL DVD under Ubuntu and copy the data to the HD... I put a modified kernel in the HD copy and now I need to create an ISO, then hope it works...

The other choice is to find an earlier copy of SL...

well, you never know.... i had someone call me about a modem problem and in the middle of the conversation they unplugged the phone in order to plug it into the modem. they didn't call me back for 20 minutes.

I tried to make a copy of my SL DVD and even though it mounted and looked the same, it would NOT install from the copy.

slodave 02-05-2010 06:50 PM

I was able to borrow a version of Leopard and that seems to be booting on the Atom MB... IF this works, I still have a speed bump... If I upgrade with the SL copy I bought, I think it may hang after it reboots....

I think I need to make a new SL DVD copy with the hacked 10.6.2 kernel that enables the Atom proc again and also is designed for a 64bit proc (this Atom is) and dual core.

So far, the borrowed version is working.. I finally got to the first screen. :)

Next....

It went to the Installer GUI and reports that the OS "can't be installed on this computer."

I have two chances left... Then I am out of ideas without having a working Mac.

nynor 02-05-2010 07:21 PM

check out InsanelyMac

i am betting there is an answer there for you.

slodave 02-05-2010 07:29 PM

I am going to dig into it again. there is an answer, but most need the use of an existing Mac to tweak the SW a bit. I've just about exhausted all the ways of doing this without a Mac. I know they are patching Leopard to work - I expect that this is why it got to the installer GUI (non patched DVD) then told me to F off.

I have been using Slackware Linux petty much since it first came out in the early 90's, but I rarely setup the boxes to load xwin. I used a copy of Ubuntu that I had downloaded, but it is lacking "root" and using 'sudo' for everything is getting to be a pain in the ass. I'm pretty sure I can edit the OSX files I need to in Linux, then create an ISO, but all the help uses 'Mac'...

Dinner is up right now... More to come in a little while.

nynor 02-05-2010 07:47 PM

good night, all.

slodave 02-05-2010 08:14 PM

Night...

Trying to install a slightly different version of SL now.... Please work...

porsche4life 02-05-2010 09:08 PM

Night boys... got all my stuff gathered up for the PCA meeting in the morning.... 3 members of our Bfast club are actually going to have breakfast together tomorrow... :D

Anyways got my new laptop loaded up... Going to get the software tomorrow and see if it is really as a big of a slam dunk as my guide says it is....

slodave 02-05-2010 09:28 PM

Night..

Made progress. Was able to get SL installed, but then on reboot, nothing. It hangs at the Darwin bootloader. Can't get the OS to boot off of the HD. I tried the bootloader cd too.

porsche4life 02-05-2010 11:01 PM

I sure hope dad is planning on driving in the morning. I can't sleep. :(

slodave 02-05-2010 11:11 PM

I managed to install a modified kernel. It now almost booted from the HD. Before, it would lock the pc up and I had to do a hard reset.

porsche4life 02-05-2010 11:12 PM

Almost still ain't a win Dave. :p

slodave 02-05-2010 11:16 PM
