I was part time at my old firm and only went full time the last 4 years because this firm insisted. Since we are not busy, to say the least, I have brought up going part time on the premise of saving money several times to my superiors. It seems as if they'd rather I sit here paid and not busy all day. I don't really udnerstand it but, whatever. i'd much rather be here all day and slammed.

My commute: put on shoes, rain pants, booties, jacket, balaclava, gloves, helmet. (2 min.) Pick up bag, get bike from garage, switch on lights - three red rear-blinking, four white forward-steady, I usually ride in rain and darkness and want to be VISIBLE. (2 min.) Ride 2 mile flat road, turn, 1/2 mile slight downhill (race buses here), fast S-curve (pass cars here), sprint 300 m up bridge (try to stay ahead of cars as long as possible), cool down 300 m down bridge, ride 1 mile through downtown (time the lights), down ramp into parking garage. (10 min.) Lock bike, take elevator to lobby then to office, take off dripping rain gear, sit down. (2 min.) Usually get heart rate to 160+ on the ride, feel great and wide awake, can make it an hour before the first cup of coffee.

I'd rather be busy as well. Either here or at home. But it does beat unemployment.
|
Of course. I've updated my resume and sent a few out because I don't think my office will be around in a couple of months.

I have been here since 2000 (round two). I just get sort hours in times like this. I get more done at home and with the band that way. |

Hate to even mention my commute. It's measured in feet and seconds in duration.

The wife being a lawyer can measure hers in mm. If she is holding her phone that is......

wow, I didn't think any service stations sere still actually "serving" I thought they had all gone by the way of "its you car you fill it up yourself!", "then pay me for the privilege of doing that!"
Only time anyone helps anyone else is if it is some poor old dear who doesn't know how to do it, or used to know yesterday but has since forgotten, Alzheimers does that to yah!! Portland needs to get into the 21st century, but that being said, if it is pi55ing down with rain, I want to live in Portland if I need fuel!!! |
When we were in Portland in 2006 we flew in. I rented a Hyundai for the week. The first time I pulled up to a pump I did my normal routine. The dude came running up and said that's illegal! I said what buying gas?
Every state has some really stupid laws. That has to be right at the top of the list of all the dumb laws in the country. 48 other states and even the Washington DC politicians are allowed to pump their own gas with no problems. |
Think of all the hose jocky's you would be putting out of work....
|
NJ is another they-pump-your-gas-service state, IIRC.
|
Yep, jersey scares me. I try not to go there anymore.
