Andy, what 6 speed transmission are you looking at getting? Have you priced that swap?

I haven't started to price or get into any detail with this yet. Just kind of throwing around ideas.

It's an SC keep it lite and fun

Already have a gutted CAT, but Rick this may be my exact route with things. Keep my SC nice lite, simple and fun.

I wish I could find a taller 5th gear. That would be ideal. Drop 5th gear rpms by 1,500 or so would be ideal. I wish someone made it. I would buy it.
Have you had a look at what Albins have available Glen?

GH85Carrera 08-28-2013 04:34 AM

Andy, from what I have heard is the only transmission that will fit is another 915. The G-50 swap requires MAJOR modifications like cutting out the torsion tubes, and changing the struts to coil overs. The type of money that is crazy to spend on an old 911. Just sell it an buy a car with a 6 speed.

On my El Camino it is easy to swap around transmissions. My Elky came with a worthless Metric 250. It died after 60,000 miles. I replaced that with a Turbo 350 but that is just a 3 speed. About 10 years ago I put in a 2004r with lockup. Now I have 4 real gears and the lockup in 4th is like a 5th. It made a huge difference. I could have put in a 700R4 but that is really for pickups. First gear is a stump pulling gear and pointless for an Elky.

I could not find anything about a taller 5th gear only replacement. I don't want to replace any of the other gears, just make 5th taller. Do they have something like that?

Outback Porsche 08-28-2013 04:47 AM

Don't know if the have anything off the shelf but I do know that they make stuff to order (mate with a class 1 off-road buggy). Your best bet is to have a chat with them.

Snoring time for me, night all.

I will drop them an email. Thanks!

I did a search on here and found a guy that used a short bell housing for the G50 swap. He only had to modify the body between the seat with some sheet metal to compensate for the larger hump. I am going to out weigh cost over practicality before I do anything and it may come to just the taller 4th and 5th gear, mods to the 915 tranny to get some smoother shifting (new syncros, gate shifters, bearing plate, new bushings and new mounts). Hydraulic clutch modification for more reliability (found some doing with a simple kit) and mods to my 3.0 motor. Then purchase a nice 6 speed to add to the garage. I am still young and have that mid-life crisis purchase to look forward to yet. Plus my fiance wants to get a newer 911 with paddle shifters (she can't drive stick).

Rick V 08-28-2013 12:16 PM

For me the G50 isn't worth the extra weight. A well managed 915 shifts just fine. I can actually get mine into first while moving during an auto-x

GH85Carrera 08-28-2013 12:23 PM

For all the work to put a G-50 in an older car it would have to do some sort of magic.

The pedal assembly and all the effort to get the hydraulic clutch to work, and modifying the tub and suspension just doesn't make economic sense to me. Refresh the 915 you have and drive it.

But it is your car and your money. You decide.

GH85Carrera 08-28-2013 03:22 PM

For any of you that have seen the movie Twister....

Do you remember in the opening there was a weatherman on TV that they showed for a while. That weatherman is Gary England and he is not an actor he is a real weatherman. He helped develop the first Radar system and he was the first weatherman to ever have his own radar system. He has many firsts. he is the guy I always tuned to when the bad pookie weather came up.

His very last weather forecast is tonight :(

He has been on air for close to 40 years. We will miss him.

If you shorten the bell housing of the G50 you don't need to cut the torsion tube.

Yup. It won't be the same without him. :(. And I really don't like David Payne.

it is a lot of work, but possible without removing the torsion tube and/or changing to coilovers. I am in the middle of it....

Mind you, I am doing a lot more than just the 6 speed....

Why are all your weathermen, um, men? Couple exceptions, but we seem to have a preponderance of smokin' hot women as weatherpeople here in LA.

GH85Carrera 08-28-2013 06:12 PM

We have a few women. To make it in this market they are not just news readers. Every one of them are a real meteorologist. They have a college degree in weather.

porsche4life 08-28-2013 06:13 PM

Exactly... They are meteorologists, not weather bimbos. ;)

Noah930 08-28-2013 06:28 PM

Are the weather bimbos any less/more accurate than those with the little AMS logo in the corner of the screen?
