Was telling my Austin friend's wife about my eyeball operation. She trains nurses. Somehow conversation got around to me telling her my card wallet doesn't have a bill fold slot so I call it an Obama wallet. (before Obama I called it my Bush wallet and will most likely start calling it my Trump wallet). She didn't understand. Said it was because I hadn't gotten a pay raise since Obama got elected. She asked if that had changed. Said I got a pay raise starting Jan 1. She asked if I voted for Trump. Told her I didn't like Hillary so yes, voted for trump. She said I was going to change my tune when he got thrown in jail, She couldn't talk to me any more, I was no longer her friend, then hung up on me.

Monday. Raining. Taxes.

I paid off my hospital bill this morning with part of our refund. I guess I haven't watched enough of Richard Rawlins to be a better negotiator. Started too low and DIDN'T meet in the middle. The gal was cool and ended up taking a bit over $500 off.

We have very good insurance but I have to wonder how someone with not so good coverage would pay a bill like that.

Hospital bills can really suck your finances dry. :(

Hobby bills can do a number on them as well. But are more fun. :D

I think my memory is shot, been a busy week. On a good note, the home theater receiver is up to date and the Pandora app works again. The replacement motherboard/CPU is in my home computer and working finally. If the MFR will fix the old one I will give it to our daughter so she can have a decently fast computer. She will go from 2.1GHz to 3.2. If they can't fix it I will buy a new board to go with the old processor since they are only about $50 for the number of SATA connections she needs.

It's a late start to a Tuesday morning, I'm sitting at pathology waiting for the vampires to do a cholesterol check. I could eat the crutch out of a low flying duck.

Nope, that's bad info that just doesn't seem to go away. Ya gotta do something to stop/slow the bleeding, a tampon will just absorb the blood. The Z fold quick clot gauze is becoming very widely accepted for traumatic hemorrhaging. Even a lot of local FDs are starting to use it.

I stopped and bought my Valentine's Day presents for next week. Thinking ahead. I was categorizing it into Quicken and I put down VD stuff for Mrs Carrera which does not look right especially since it was from Walgreens. I spelled out Valentines Day and it was just a card and some chocolate.

That's a nice idea Glen. I came home last week and told my missus that I am going on a business trip on the 14th.

Finally done with the vampires. They botched the right arm and blood was every where. I had a little involuntary snooze. Thought I was over doing that as I haven't done it for ages.

The current generation of quick clot gauze really has no downside (other than cost) so use it even if you're not sure it's necessary.

For extremities, brachial or femoral arteries are the main concern. We've come a long way in our understanding and techniques for tourniquet. I read a paper by several Army surgeons a while back that gave an absolute low end of roughly 5 hours of a tourniquet being applied before any irreversible damage occurs. Once it's on though, you need to leave it there until a trained professional can't remove it properly. There are guidelines for a gradual release. Instant release can blow out an artery and cause more damage than the initial trauma. In short, for extremity wounds: apply tourniquet, pack the wound with QC gauze (use 2 fingers to really stuff it up into the wound, always stuff towards the heart) and call an ambulance.

Abdominal wounds are much more in depth. Aside from the abdominoaortic artery, the liver and kidneys are big breeders. Diaphragm punctures will mess with breathing, but you can manually assist that with chest compressions. They make an AAA tourniquet, but it's large, expensive and hasn't been widely field tested. Best bet here is stuff it with QC gauze and maintain pressure on the wound with your knee until help arrives.

Chest hits are entirely different annd chest seals save lives. It's not really feasible to apply pressure to the wound and some of the techniques require precision.

The best thing would be to take a course from someone with SOF medical experience. There are a handful of companies out there that provide weekend crash courses that will cover enough to keep someone alive until EMS can respond.
Dark Angel Medical does a really good one and sells a couple of solid kits of varying sizes.

This would be the kit that'd be best to have for all around and range purposes.

Joe, those are all materials I really hope to never need. I have a first aid kit that is likely so old it is useless except the clean bandages. Like the road flares I used to carry that I bought in the 1970s. I am real glad I never needed any of that stuff. We do a more modern first aid kit in our scaredy hole. I need to rotate the bottled water out of there this spring.
