YOU CAN WHACK AT A RATTLER with a machete. actually i own a USGI machete, with a very sharp blade that i use for whacking lil baby bunnies and lil baby fur seals heads off!

actually i use it for whacking overgrown cholla and prickly pear cactus. a most excellent tool for further dee-struction of the dezert when the dezert does NOT COMPLY with my wishes or needs. ie. in my living area.

machete=BAD JU JU when dealing with 6-8 ft wattelsnake.

6ft-8ft shovel/hoe handle= mucho safer anti wattelsnake veapon.

i have been struck at so many times it really is a blessing i have not be nailed yet! i walk around here at night this time of year just waiting for one. had them in laundry room/garage/outbuildings/under vehicles/in the damn pool/on the front porch/on the back porch/under the front windows/in the driveways.................everywhere!

butt its a really nice piece of property with a great view!

that black snake, which ate the rattle snake, does it bite people? If it does, is it poison enough to kill a kid?

Black Snakes are non-venomous. No poison. The only way its bite can harm you is if it gets infected. Wash the wound like you would any cut or scrape, put some bacterial ointment on it, and you're good to go.

I've been bitten numerous times... it's nothing. I kept lots of non-venomous snakes as pets in our carport in home built cages from the age of 7 until I left for college.

Watched them eat other critters I fed to them, watched them lay eggs, and watched the eggs hatch.

When I told my parents I was interested in doing this, they told me to get some books and memorize what the poisonous ones looked like, and the rest were okay.

Mom even caught a beautiful 6-foot Eastern Kingsnake for me one day while I was at school... she pinned its head down with a garden rake, grabbed it behind the head, and put it in one of my cages for me. She was cooler than cool.

Hey John,

If you do not mind, anything that looks like that and is looking like its going to strike, I will either leave it alone or find a shovel to get rid of it. Snakes and me do not get along very well...

I guess the four kids in the yard did not see the Rattler, If they had I am sure one of them would have shot the thing with their own gun and not let the cop have all the fun..

After all if we believe all the hype everyone in Texas has guns right..

Rattle snakes are harmless unless cornered or stepped on. Now black mambas are another story.

oh my god. oh my god. Alright, I give up. There is no way I'll get near a snake. And there is no way I let the snake get anywhere near my kids. I am out of here.

The rule on our place is that Bull snakes live as long as they are not near the house. Once the get near the house we either take them out or the Lab finds them coerces them into striking towards her and then grabs and kills them. 3 This summer have died by black lab. If they are out somewhere else on the place we leave them. No if it is venomous it is death by sharpened hoe.

Oh its really cool to throw a half dead snake on a harvester ant den...

I jumped when I turned around and saw it. Then I took it outside and threw it on the roof - was night. Next day I skinned, tacked, salted and threw it back on the roof for a few days. Nice skin!

Rick, it's amazing how much Heel n Toe knows about snake and trusts his knowlege. I admired that and love to read his stories as watching the discovery channels. For me, I am an ignorance about snake, yes, and have no interested in having a snake, at least up until now, and I won't feel comfortable living near them. To me, any snake would scares me and I believe the ignorance of snake like me takes more than 50% of this society. Didn't you know that?

AssFole snake bit our dog Sunday. We were gone 1 hour can back and her face was swelling. Trip to vet = no anti-venom, they give antibodies, steroid and pain shots + blood tests = $1500. If they needed to give the anti-venom she would have needed 2 vials at 800 per (they only had one) human anti-venom is $2000+ more blood tests yesterday = $290.
It was probably a cotton mouth or a water moccasin.
You think I like snakes right now? Spread moth ball crystals under the decking.

Does anyone have any other suggestions to keep them out of the yard?

For a giant Rattler in my tard, I might do that. For a non-venomous snake I wouldn't even think about it.

do what the old KA-BOYZ(cowboys) used to do...........................

when sleeping on the ground in yer bedroll, you take yer lariat(rope) and wrap it around yer sleepin area. wattelsnakes will not cross over the rope becuz their AFEARED of it!

come on you city slickers i thought everyjuan knew dat juan! DUH!

i personally walk around with about a 1000 beers swilling in my belly, with my osha approved anti-wattelsnake flippy flops, wearing sunglasses, on a nice humid 114-116 degree day..............................

and spread RAT POISON FROM HELL in every stinking RAT HOLE I FIND!

A) wattelsnakes will not be out during heat of day now. nights only.

B) no RATS/MEEZEEZ= No WATTELSNAKES dont quote me and please read small print no guarrantees

C) leave NOTHING around they can get under to hide. ie. all wood piles stacked off of ground on 8x8x16's. this doesnt preclude mr/mrs wattelsnake from climbing up into woodpile to sleep the day away but it helps a hell of alot.

D) always FEAR YOUR POOL! never just open skimmer basket and reach in to grab basket to empty leaves etc. had that juan happen to me once and ONLY ONCE!

E) remove all rocks/low hanging drooping bushes trees from around living area. good idea since ya need a 30 foot wide defensive fire break around structure.

F) as mentioned station shovels/hoes at strategic places around property for insta grab "FIGHT TO THE DEATH" are you a man or a MOUSE?

G) dont walk outside house at night sober or drunk without FLASHLIGHT! ask me how i know drunk and sober!

H) clear areas so you can SEE their outline be it dark or night. they are cameleon like and they will camo themselves to the surrounding vegetation and dirt. ie. around dirt they will be tan-ish. around trees that drop leaves they will be green-ish. this applies to most CROTALUS here in AZ. aside from yellow red black jump back CORAL SNAKES. or is it red yellow black jump back.......ah hell i ferget! we'll let the LONG HANDLED SHOVEL or RWS pistole decide!

I) for injected..................the equation is this for how many times one is injected (bitten) by a wattelsnake. NUMBER OF TATTOOS X NUMBER OF BUDWEISERS X HOW SHORT/LONG YOUR LEGS/ ARMS ARE X LENGTH OF WATTELSNAKE X HOW MUCH YOU HAVE FEEKED WITH HIM AND PISSED HIM OFF = HOW MANY TIMES YOU WILL BE BITTEN! please give these figures to helo crew as you are evacuated and to triage team if yer still conscious!!!!

I end up killing 3-5 snakes a week, they just freak me out and I've been bitten by a Fare -delance(sp) before, so they gotta go. You might not have a big problem with them where you are but in the jungle they are everywhere.
