Check your smoke detectors!

Time for a periodic reminder to change your smoke detectors' batteries. I awoke to a chirping detector this morning. No fire, just a battery on its last legs. Of course, when I went to change all of them, I discovered one (in my guitar room!!!) had no battery at all. I just paid $18 for five batteries (and $20 for two bottles of wine). Will you ever have a fire in your house that costs less than that? I also have fire extinguishers in my kitchen, garage and by my bed, in case a .45 and a shotgun can't deal with the fire.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends that you replace them on the Fall Sunday morning when you set your clocks back for Daylight Savings Time, which makes sense. It's the fall when you start using heaters and fireplaces. I replace all nine of mine on that Sunday, every year.

It's also a good idea to replace the entire detector every nine years. They do have a finite lifespan.

Heck, I'm thinking of installing one of those self-activated fire extinguishers (set to go off at a certain temp) in my garage. Bedroom is directly above the garage.

Uh, you live in a one story house...

I guess the deal went through on the house. Congrats!

For the first 40 years of my life I never used a fire extinguisher. In the last 2 years, I have pulled the trigger in the house and the garage. That reminds me, I need to get them serviced or pick up a couple more.

If you have gas anything, get a Kiddie combo CO/Gas for $55. Gave one to mom, and a year later it went off- crack in the furnace.

I guess it depends on how big a crack you have...

This speaks volumes about character, inclusive with the intended role of the federal government.
Thanks for sharing those thoughts.

This last winter, took a friend's dog for a walk, and saw water pouring down the siding of a house. I checked with a neighbor and made sure the owner was called. Turned out someone had installed a bthroom in an unheated attic.

The next week I saw water pouring out of an open garage, and made sure someone was aware.

I didn't check the homeowner's political affiation first......

Brakleen and lysol will trigger CO2 alarms as well. Don't ask me how I know this one...

We have a smoke monitoring / detector system, this photoelectronic sensor also detects a rise in heat temperature up to 135°F. When triggered, it will notify the monitoring center and fire department if needed, as well as your preferred contacts.
