I think the BGE look cool and I have no doubt they work great. That said, I wonder if you couldn't replicate the results with a big thick and deep clay or ceramic garden pot, a shallower one for the lid, and inside some bricks and metal grilles for food and charcoal. Not as high status but you could probably find green pots if that matters.

That big Weber is a 6 burner deal. I bought it because I throw huge family parties 3 or 4 times a year. About 100 people show up (no kidding) so the Weber is perfect for it. But, cleaning it is a b1tch! The drain pan is 4 feet long and doesn't fit in any sink, not even in the big laundry tub sink I had installed in the backyard BBQ area. Also, using just a couple of burners for smaller parties is a waste of propane and gets the rest of the grill dirty. At least that's how I sold to wifey so I could buy the cool, rolling Coleman BBQ. |

My neighbor and I have been talking about building a combination gas / charcoal with a hand crank rack system out of fire brick up in his cabin. My wife suggested Pizza oven too. I think she is nuts. That would be fun project. |

I use to have a Ducane grill that was fairly nice. It needed parts that would rust out every few years. When I bought it, I paid for a lifetime warranty on the majority of the parts and it was easy to have them send new ones. A few years back, I called again and when it came time to ship them, they wanted a credit card. Seems they were sold to another company and all the prior "lifetime" warranties were now void. Great.

My BBQ is ordinary gas, but below the grates (above the gas flame) is a half inch layer of volanic stones on a cast iron grate. I preheat it for a while to get the stones glowing red hot and the cooking results are as close to charcole without being charcole. However I do agree charcole is best. |
