I also remember when our street address changed from RD3 Box 45 to 45 Orchid Place to 2 Orchid Place over a span of 2 years. All the same house.

RD3=Rural Delivery Route #3
Then still using the Box number... for some reason
Then changing to House #2, there were only 4 on the street so 45 didn't work.

I remember something like this too. This was in the mid-late 80's even.

I can't remember the address, only parts of it. but the phone number of my parent's hasn't changed, even though they have moved.

Yes, Bell owned everything, even the phones. You were charged a fee to rent the phone every month on your bill. It was their phone. Even after pushbutton dialing.

Finally w/ deregulation, you could buy the phone or keep renting it. Then you started seeing phones in the stores.

Anyone remember the "ADDL" Anti-Digit Dialing League? A group sued to try to prevent the change from ALpine 5-3838 to 255-3838.

The guy I worked for when I was in High School grew up in Alabama. He lamented the passing of operators dialing the calls for you. He remembered picking up the phone and just asking to talk to daddy and the operator knew who that was. His dad ran a pharmacy and was one of the first folks to get a phone at home in central Alabama. Voice activated dialing was organic not digital in those days.

Still have the phone from the old house, a rotary model complete with the brown fabric covering on the cord.

I still use my parents old phone number for my business. The number has been in the family for almost 50 years.
