I believe it, I've seen a bunch of stuff in the NE, OK, and TX. Suprisingly though, there's also a lot of opportunity in CA, at least in the aerospace industry.

Why don't the Miami folks go north a little to Jackonville?

It is interesting. I wonder though what the pay gap is between the jobs avaliable and the jobs lost is.

Where can we find the rest of the list?

Not the least bit surprised - either by the up ones or the down ones.

Ummm.....all of florida sucks........we moved down here last year and it took my wife a freaking year to find a part time job, and she's in the medical field......
She could've taken a full time job in her field for $8 an hour.....it's f'ing stupid down here....luckily she landed something in the county system which has good possibilities for the future once she gets some time in, still getting my ass kicked though.....

Is ocala fl on the list? Too small to see on my bb....

It's because FL has nothing in terms of resources other than government/defense industry jobs, tourism and real estate. All of which are in the toilet right now.

And yes, I used to live there, so I know.

Healthcare. Which is booming. Followed closely by the mortuary business.

I dunno...SoFLA seems to be doing OK from what I can see out my front window.

Bell, what position does your wife hold in the "medical" field? There are tons of nursing jobs down here (but they aren't paying a lot...mostly filled by Haitians, Cubans and South Americans who seem to be willing to work for less).

Isn't Ocala a really small town (or is it a suburb of Orlando?).

I have a friend who went for a 2 yr. certificate program in Radiology Tech (Dosimetry?) and she's pulling down about $60k. Another 2 yrs. of OJT and she'll be pulling almost $100k.

Portland, OR doesn't surprise me...the whole state is a tax hell, with people who provide jobs leaving.

I went through the last recession (2002-03) in PDX. I learned very quickly that Oregon is NOT the place to be during a recession. Holy hell, I never thought Oregon would be so horrible for jobs...

We left after my wife had been out of work about 8 months. It just wasn't worth it. Within a week of moving back here, she had a good job again and life was great.

I can attest that Florida has been hit hard - all industries - all classes. And POP - we do have manufacturing - one of the biggest makers of the chapstick container for all north america is in St. Petersburg, we have CAE - one of the biggest flight simulator companies and of course Mons Venus - world famous strip club.

Oregon gets us with a double whammy... Poor employment and over-priced housing. Not overpriced compared to California, but definately high. Nasty combination. I think the last employment stats for us in southern Oregon were around 15% unemployment.

Steve's looking at a 1/3 of before tax income pay cut in September. Ouch. That's gonna leave a mark...

True, we are the world's #1 travel destination.

Miami is the financial/banking capital of South America. That isn't going anywhere.

Its also THE distribution hub for materials coming into and out of the US to South America. (International Trade (40% of all U.S. exports to Latin and South America pass through Florida) )

Aerospace (Florida ranks 4th among the states in overall aerospace employment with 23,000 jobs. )

Florida also has a pretty big agriculture biz. LINK

Definitely more to Florida than what you listed.

That being said, I am not suprised by that chart- getting a job down here right now is tough.

See here:

My buddy lost his job in November and just finally got hired on Monday. He has a damn good resume too. The economy down here is in tough shape. Real estate was one of the big drivers down here, construction being directly related. Things got way too far ahead of demand, and it will be 10 years before this normalizes again IMO. But our demand will eventually catch up- our population is still growing as it always has.

I think the difference is that we have many things going for us, and we will recover whereas some of the other places in trouble might not have a light at the end of the tunnel.
