thanks folks
It's really looking like we're going to give RE a solid chance. There will always be IT jobs, but I have this bull by the horns right now. As for calculating my earnings per hour, well my previous salary position was terrible that way anyhow. Working on site launches till 3am for nights on end, only to have projects scrapped at the last minute. Chronically understaffed because of cutbacks/layoffs. Company X seems way better in that regard, but still. Either way, if I have to work twice as hard to match what I made before, then I would still be happy with that. It's hardly even "work" half the time anyway, especially when I'm dealing with old homes. Biggest problem is compensating for that $$$ hit in lost commissions... I will have to bust my balls to get ahead of that. Working on a plan now

Jake,
I wondered what was taking up your time these days. I think you are on the right path. You can do a lot of things for the money, but if you are enjoying the RE gig (and, as one of the people on this board who has met Jake and has been in sales and customer service for about three decades, I think you are a good fit there), you are wise to tell the folks who are looking for coders "thanks, but no thanks." When you are looking at older houses with clients, make sure you have the number for the Energy Audit handy. ![]() You will do well, my friend. Les

Jake, I think you're making the right choice. It's hard to find a job that you can be passionate about, but it sounds like you may have done it. I think you'll do well.

Stick with the RE. Like oldE says you're a good fit. Personable, construction knowledge and intregrity, how can you go wrong. And even if there are a few more hours you'll enjoy it and a happy NFN means a happy Mrs.NFN and baby NFN.

Thanks for the kind words, folks.
After several sleepless nights and much deliberation, I turned down the job at Company X. I told them that I appreciated their great job offer, but I had to give RE a solid chance. Otherwise I would have ended up there wondering if I should have done Real Estate. Maybe I'll fail horribly and go back grovelling next year, but at least then I'd know. So anyway, now I'm committed!
