At The Buffet

While I was at the Buffet Thursday evening there was a 5 or 6 year old little boy at the next table who was giving his Mother fits about eating his vegetable. I leaned over and whispered to him, that if he didn't eat his vegetables as his Mother told him to do I was going to tell Santa Clause personally that he was being a BAD kid. that Santa Clause wouldn't be stopping by his house to give him any presents for Christmas. That on Christmas Eve Santa would land on his roof and look at his list of naughty kids and say, Yep this is one I'm gong to have to pass by, and give the good kid next door all the presents I was going to leave for this BAD little kid." the little kid started to cry and grudgingly started to eat his vegetables.

Did the mother yell at you for interfering? If not I'm suprised the way people are nowadays

What if the kid figured out that you were in fact santa?

better not cry..
Better not shout,
I'm telling you why.

Santa Claus is...

dead.

i did not read any of the other replies, but are you crazy! you better look like tom selleck or be 80 years old to get away with that stuff. now a days, you try to help out like that and you get hammered by irate moms telling you to mind your own business.

a friend told me this story that he went to stop this guy from beating on his (not my friends) girl friend, then the girl started beating on him for messing with her boy friend.

I'm with Tabs on this one as I firmly believe when one is in a place such as a restaurant and kids, adults, or circus animals are making so much friggin' noise at the table beside you it Becomes your business... kind of like sitting beside a stranger in a movie theatre and having them touch your knee with theirs... it is an encroachment upon your space.

Maybe the other alternative to saying something would have been to enlist the aid of management to assist in asking the mother at the table to calm the brats down, but most of them are so terrified of running off a customer they won't intervene. And what about speaking to the parent? It'd do you no good because any "parent" that lets their kids raise hell like that in public is bound to be just as bad as their kids and ignore you, cuss you out or punch you in the nose.

BTW, my mother would have hauled me outside and changed the color of my butt from pink to scarlet had I jerked her wound like that... I know from experience!

You just can't reason with some people, right?

I told a lady last week that she was way out of line in a restaurant ...in fact since she would not leave I left. I talked to the server the next day and was told that the lady had become as nice as could be after I left. She did say that that man has the Devil in him....I figure if you want to act like an azz and are bothering those that are around you STFU or leave.

idealism is fantastic. then you have kids and learn about reality.

or you don't have kids and just go through the rest of your life believing you know better than every parent you witness having difficulty with their child.

I have three sons and thru have been eating out since they where infants. When one would act up one of us would take him out to the car and there we stayed until he was ready to rejoin the others. Yes there where times we did not go back inside but they all learned to behave or go hungry :-)

With all due respect to "berettafan" I can't buy this line of thinking... the "then you have kids and learn about reality" thing. This is so much like some people I currently know and how they choose to not deal with the deplorable behavior of some of their kids... that "kids will be kids" thing. And again the reasoning doesn't hold water for me.

See the first quote above. This man sounds like my dad and mom! My sister and I learned to behave. They had it down to a science. They took us everywhere when we were kids... couldn't afford a baby sitter I suppose, and if we started to act up, get out of line, etc., we'd usually get one warning. After that one warning it was On if we didn't straighten up fast. They were so good at it that all it took was a Look to make us stop cold in our tracks and behave.

I'm not saying they were like "Bull Meacham" in "The Great Santini" (I think I remember that character's name) They weren't brutal but they had a handle on us.

I have friends who have well behaved kids that I have never even heard raise their voices when around adults. I see others on a regular basis through my job. I also see hellions that need to be carried behind the woodshed, as they used to say "back in the day."

As far as this line: "you don't have kids and just go through the rest of your life believing you know better than every parent you witness having difficulty with their child." I don't think for a minute that I know better than every parent that has difficulty with their child(ren). I just believe it is possible to live in "reality" with kids that do know how to behave.

Again, I mean no disrespect to "berettafan."
I'm just sayin'.

Lookin' i completely understand your thinking on this.

I felt the same for many years. Wondered what kind of awful parents would have a kid acting like that.

But man when you have kids i promise you even the best intentions and plans become compromised and you have no choice but to roll with it. I think the best way to explain it is that kids are human beings such that everything you do/say has a consequence...some unintended. I don't mean to say i'm a wuss about disciplining my child, far from it, but i have learned that while being the 'buddy parent' will get you in trouble so will trying to be the drill seargant parent.

I do strongly feel when kids are being horrible in public they should be removed from the situation but then again....well you'll see when/if you have kids.

Here's another way to describe it;

The reality of raising a child vs. what you THOUGHT it would be like is quite humbling in the same way going to your first autocross and getting spanked by cars with twice the weight and half the power. As guys we grow up knowing we are God's gift to performance driving....then we try it!

There is no right way or wrong way of raising children, there is only your way.

In actuality it is the way you were taught to do onto your children as it was done onto to you. Even in revulsion of what your parents have done unto you will be an echo of that raising.

THE ONLY WAY TO UNDO WHAT WAS DONE TO YOU IS BY CONFRONTING THE SOURCE AND TELLING THEM IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS THAT YOU DIDN'T LIKE IT

There is no other way to be truly transcendent, to change the the modius of operandi.
