THEORY: Own a Porsche? Likely you also own a Subaru.

I have a theory. It seems most all my friends who own a Porsche also own a Subaru [or a BMW -- or an Audi Quattro or they want to...]. Maybe this is because you can't haul a$$ over gravel, snow and dirt without tearing up your nice 911 and you get a sub-con-science* need to have a vehicle for these things. Let's see your Porsche and your Subaru [or etc.]. Doesn't have to be in the same photo, but let's see if my theory rings true.

* sub-con-science means that you have scientifically analyzed your vehicular needs (well, ok, "desires") and realized deep in the depths of your hidden Freudian Jungophilic limbic system that the best way to rid yourself of absolute LUST for ripping over broken ground (without skis) is in an old $wd or AWD beater. Something you can tear apart because it is cheap and sub-con. Now, that's science.

In the 70's and 80's if you owned a Porsche, you should also have an Audi. It never got out of my system.

Not a bad theory. I have a Saab for the reasons you list (sort of). For those who don't remember, Saab rally cars used to be common. http://www.saabmuseum.com/rally/index.html

As much fun as it might be, I don't drive my 911 in snow or on gravel/dirt roads. (Maybe if my 911 wasn't shiny black...) I do, however, have a set of dedicated winter tires for my Saab.

Oh, and if I had to replace the Saab (so far it has "only 149K miles, so it may be awhile) it would probably be with a WRX 5-door.

After driving the 911, I really don't feel like driving a car with the ignition key in a "normal" location. ;)

Just own a Volvo 240DL now.... but, back in the day I drove a Subaru -- "Sammy Subaru" -- for a short period of time!

Jeep Cherokee. Five of 'em. Never a Subie. Tried a couple of Audis; BMWs, etc. What the heck, I've had about 30 911s, so I've typically had one type of hauler or another as a DD. But never a Japanese car.

Thats me. Other car is a kid hauling snow pitching camp gear hauling 2006 legacy GT turbo wagon. ;)

Also, Subaru made some of the recent Saab wagons and I think sedans...

dentist90 08-31-2009 08:45 PM

I do have an AWD for the winter, and it goes like stink in the snow. Not a Subie, however...

I actually just bought this Allroad for my wife/family. It's my first ever Audi. A six speed manual and it's really in exceptional condition. Wot a beast!

Wife used to have an Outback. Traded it on an X3 6-speed. Oh, and I drive a truck (see the other thread: Porsche owners also own trucks).

Tim_in_MD 09-01-2009 04:04 AM

Good theory....I have an '06 Subaru Outback as well as an '86 Ford F250. I guess I support both the truck and subaru theories!

JABSEA 09-01-2009 04:51 AM

We have an A6 besides the Porsches. Never owned a Subaru.

berettafan 09-01-2009 05:53 AM

Not me. Looked at them but wife hated the look of the forester and the outback had zero rear seat room. Not to mention the standard engine was a dog. I thought the forester was a well thought out vehicle though (but for the motor) and could certainly live with a turbo model.

Have yet to see a well driven subie at an auto-x event. Gearing looks to be wrong or something. Maybe the turbo takes a while to spool up? Dunno but just not impressive when i've seen them.

Absolutely no desire to own an Audi.

And, IMHO, if a 911 owner wants to go fast over gravel he already has a fantastic vehicle to do it with!

BeyGon 09-01-2009 05:55 AM

I have a 89 Vanagon and it is getting a Subaru 2.2 transplant now, it will be running the new motor this month. Does that count?

Drdogface 09-01-2009 06:12 AM

Me: 2001 Outback and '78 SC (also a Dodge Dually)
