Often followed by, "911's look like VW beetles." This is not to say the 911 is not a brilliant performance machine, we all know it is. But seriously.........TIIIIIRED. Easily the longest running continuous body style in automotive history. Time to retire the oooooold girl. Last edited by m21sniper; 09-02-2009 at 10:32 PM.. |

Get over it, Snipe. The only claim to fame the 928 has received was when Tom Cruise dunked one in Lake Michigan in Risky Business.

Having owned, like most here, several different Porsche's I can see why the 911 has remained and the others have faded into auto history. If the 944 and 928 were so good, how come they fell by the wayside. They didn't, and don't have that immediate wow factor the 911 does. Everything my 944T and 928S manual done, my 911 3.2 and my 930 did better and looked better doing it.
And these new ones are no different. Last edited by dewolf; 09-02-2009 at 11:19 PM.. |

But this really has nothing to do with the 928, you and a few others are just being childish in mentioning it to deflect from the fact that the 911 is a VW Beetle based, 70 year old design that's just plain ancient in appearance. Time for a re-write. |

The 944 evolved into the 951, then the 968, then was replaced by the Boxster- a new and exciting design. I mean seriously, we can just change your statement to "If the Ferrari 512TR was so good, why did it fall by the way side?" Because all the cars i mentioned were replaced after a long and succesful run by even more exciting, more modern, FRESHLY SHAPED cars. And then there's the 70+ yo body style of the 911. The 911 has been boring for decades. Just imagine if Ferrari had stopped designing new body styles for their flagships decades ago like Porsche did. What a boring world this would be. I loved the older 911s. The 80s models were the epitome of the line to me. But hey, the design got very old and stale in the subsequent 29 years (and it wasn't fresh then either). PS: Comparing the interior and ride comfort of a 928 to a same year 911 is just plain silliness. The 928 was in a whole different league. Another thing you can do with a 928 is actually brake or change throttle settings in a curve. Imagine that. LOL. 911's have cult appeal, they always have. But they're not high volume cars, they never have been. They're niche cars- like Saabs, as one example. And a lot of people hate 911s, i hate to have to tell you. This is a quote from the Cayenne/Panamera to be axed by VW thread currently going on here at Pelican: Quote:

Jesus, what an idiot. The 928 was not even a sports car, Sparky. Talk about a "niche car", a big heavy/fast Grand Touring car for a an extremely small audience. The 911 is the most successful and most user-friendly sports car in history, not to mention the most durable and enduring. Porsche sold probably 10 911s for every 928 when the 928 was in production.
You've found people who hate 911s? Wow. It's a free country. (Used to be at least). There are large groups of people dedicated to old Mustang 5.0s and other POS cars, no one ever got rich over-estimating the taste of the American public. So what. As for the 911 being in production for 70 years, there's that problem w/ facts again. Lastly, your statement that you consider 1980s impact-bumper 911s to be "the epitome of the line" explains a lot. That and your pictures of "hot chicks" that you're dating is exhibit "A". Your taste is in your ass.

I will say it again. Just because the motor is in the back doesn't mean that the 911 is VW based. Just give it up man.

And the 911 is hardly the most successful sports car in history. Most successful at what? Certainly not sales. Most user friendly? The early models were extremely tail happy and dangerous. Most durable? I guess you never heard about all those various high dollar 911 engine problems? The 928 was intended to be the most exclusive top of the line GT flagship. Comparing it's sales volume to the 911 is apples to oranges, and completely pointless. It's like saying the 911 was a failure because the 944 outsold it. (personally speaking i think the 944 is a better car than contemporary 911s too...but that's another whole debate) Your post is an ad hominem fail at all levels. Nice try though. Quote:

I see a lot of personal attacks and deflection to the 928 out of you, because you're obviously an immature guy who cannot handle anyone criticizing the 70+ yo 911 design. ![]() Ad hominem personum is not an effective counter-argument sports-fan. Quote:

I'm grabbing a beer and some popcorns for this thread... (figuratively speaking)
I'm starting a pool... I bet this thread will go on for... lets say... five pages... who's in? You can also bet on "thread will turn nasty and get locked down in (X) pages" Oh and gorgeous car BTW... I would buy one... but I am not likely to drop $250K on any car in his lifetime. Carry on!

Sorry, it's just been a long time since I've been in a good old-fashioned internet flame-fest over Porsches. Feeling nostalgic, I guess.

I love all types of cars... Italian, English, German... in the 40's, 50's, and 60's American automakers made some damn fine rolling art.
I would like to own a 911 some day... but not a new one... (only because I'm financially challenged) By far my favorite Porsche is the 944... then the 356... just my luck I want a 1974 911, and they are going up in value. ![]()

I suppose some would say the 928 is evolved from the 944 that came from the 924 (a Volkswagon)?
