And apparently a lot of you care about the heritage of a 911, since it's a point of denial and finger pointing for many of the posters on this thread. I actually agree, who cares what the lineage is....except that the shape has been around forever and is just plain tired.

Imagine if Ferrari stopped making new "flagship" body styles after the 308. What a sucky world this would be then.

I don't see that the "customers wouldn't let the car be retired." A new CEO simply took over that was a 911 kool aid drinker. Had he not taken over when he did the 911 would be long gone, and we'd have all been blessed with numerous new Porsche designs in the intervening years. Sigh...if only that had happened.

Read up on the recent Porsche/VW merger. Porsche was flush with cash until the VW acquisition. The purchase left Porsche cash-poor and leveraged, but otherwise operationally sound. It would appear from your statements that you believe Porsche was bankrupt and VW stepped in as their white knight. Simply untrue.

I will admit i don't exactly know what the hell Porsche was up to with it's attemtped takeover of VW.

But i will point out that Porsches' financial success is due more to the Cayenne and the Boxster than it is to the 911.

That much is fact. Porsche itself has said without the Cayenne and an "entry level" model (ie the boxster) they could not have survived.

Porsche designers BROUGHT BACK some styling of the early 911 (to much happiness to the 911 enthusiasts here.)

If that doesn't tell you how much the 911 styling has changed, I don't know what will.

Your 308 arguement is lame. Ferrari's Dino, then 308, then 328, 348, 355, 360, 430, and now 458 are all VERY familial much like Porsche's 911, 964, 993, 996, 997 progression. Both shapes are evolutionary.

And the 308 was never a flagship, rather the entry-level

Ferrari has come out with many brilliant designs you've not mentioned that are not even remotely familial to the 308. You sir, are the one with the lame argument. ;)

If Ferrari thought like Porsche, those cars would never have even existed, they'd only be making evolved 308s.

The point is that Ferrari is still producing a 'tired' design in the newest 458 that can be traced back almost 40 years to the Dino. The basic 'Magnum PI' shape is still discernable, just like the newest 997s.

Since the Dino, Ferrari has had some great designs. Since the first 911, Porsche has had some great designs.

Nope the 458 doesnt look anything like a 328 to me, and the 328 looks only vaguely like a Dino.

That 458 is pure sex. Why cant porsche build something like that?

The three Ferrari's do share similar lines. It's very evident. The Dino and the 458 really share similar body lines.

I don't see it. The 328 is far more wedge shaped and angular than the Dino, and has freakin' flip up headlights. The only real similiarity is the rear window angle and the side vent. The grilles on all 3 are also very different. The 458 looks nothing like either of them, at least to me.

Did i mention the 458 is the sexiest car i've ever seen?

I agree about the 328 having straighter lines, but that was an 80's thing. I remember most European cars going that route.
