Convert underside of deck to carport?
I have a side load garage, and a 50x10 deck off the back of my house. It would be pretty easy to add another parking space underneath the deck and have plenty of room for storage, so....
Anybody convert the underside of a deck to a carport/shed? I am not sure what to use for the roof. The cheapest way I can think of is making a frame from 1.5” PVC, covering with a tarp, and attaching directly to the joists. Pitched of course. Has anybody seen or done anything like this? I am open to suggestions. Thanks! ![]()

BK - you can buy the under deck "gutters" that run between your joists to keep the rain out. Depending on your budget, you could do a cheap version of this with some heavy duty vapor barrier (Visqueen or similar) and create loops between each joist. Just make the loops tigher near the house and droopier at the edge of the deck to allow run-off.

I designed and built mine.
I bought 2' wide Stainless sheets, turned-up the long edges 3/4" in on both sides, and dropped them in between the joists (2' oc). The turned-up 'flange' nailed to the side of the joist, with the whole panel sloping down to the gutter. TO keep water from leaking along side the joists I made joist 'roofs.' --On top of the joists, and under the decking, copper flashing ~10" wide. Centered and bent along the top of the joist --just ~30° downward bend. --the copper is soft, and easy to bend inplace.

you're looking for something along the lines of corrugated roofing (chicken house roofing as we call it).
nice to have extra working space like that!

Thanks for the ideas guys. The metal corrogated roofing is a little out of my budget. I need 25 pieces at about $15 per. I've been searching craigslist for some used stuff with no luck so far.

Lowes sells plastic sheets designed for this. Not sure if they stock it but I've seen it in their flyers.

There is a vinyl ceiling material made for your plan. People routinely use it in Multi story condo complexes where every unit has a deck over a deck.
