I say yes he should be in for what he did while playing baseball, his scandal is nothing compared to breaking historic records while on drugs. Compare gambling to some of the other crap that goes on in pro sports and its nothing.

Yes, one year after he dies.
Is his lifetime ban from baseball still in effect? At least with drugs, the players are still striving to win the game. When you are betting on your own team, the competition has been extinguished.

Another "Yes" vote here, and for the very reason "s_morrison57" stated. I wouldn't make him wait the year after he'd dead like "legion" wants to... maybe just not let him attend the ceremony. :-)

Absolutely yes. And about the betting -- I never heard that he bet AGAINST his own team. As far as I'm concerned, betting on your team is no big deal.

I could be persuaded, but it would take some acting contrite on Rose's part.
As far as I know, to this day, he has behaved like a victim, even after admitting he bet on his own team. First it was "I never gambled on baseball." Then it was "I gambled on baseball, but never on my own team." Then it was "I gambled on my own team."

Yes, absolutely he should be allowed in the hall of shame.
Oh wait, you said hall of fame. Lesse, He said he didn't bet on baseball games and then later came out and admitted that not only did he bet on professional baseball games (including his own team's games), he was in debt big time to bookies. He not only did something to shame the game and bring it's integrity into question, he lied about it. no way should he be honored in any way. Unless they have a lefty hall of fame ![]() Some of us know the difference between right and wrong and we don't admire or honor those who don't. Last edited by sammyg2; 09-10-2009 at 12:20 PM.. |

The dude was one of the best hitters of all time, he belongs in the hall of fame.
They aren't keeping Bonds, Ryan, Conseco, Sosa, or Mcguire out for what I see was a much worse offense to the game. The guy has / had a gambling problem, he has paid the price more than most do for their mistakes. I grew up watching him and Mike Schmidt play for the phils though so I am biased.

Isn't the "Hall of Fame" based upon a player's lifetime performance?
Unless there is a minutia of evidence that he threw a game(or two or three) for the mob, or performed with drugs.....what does gambling have to do with it? |

Let me revise my earlier statement:
First it was "I never gambled on baseball." Then it was "I gambled on baseball, but never on my own team." Then it was "I gambled on my own team, but never bet against it..." I'm guessing in another ten years we will know the truth. For a guy in massive gambling debt, it's a heck of a lot easier to intentionally lose than to win... I'm just saying, I'm skeptical of where the story is right now.

I'm not arguing whether or not he should be in the hall of fame. For me it is a "yes" without question.
I'm only arguing whether or not he has come clean enough to deserve the satisfaction within his own lifetime...

Well let's see.....micheal vick did his time for something much criminally worse then betting on your team to win and he's already back on the field......
Pete rose admitted what he did, "took his punishment" for the past how many years?......and yet still there is this debate....

No. He bet on baseball, his team and then lied about it. I think at some point sports should have consequences and punish someone. Until then it will be just more of the same. I can do whatever I want and get away with it because I play...pick a sport. I mean what is even the point of having rules if nothing happens when you break them?

The year after his death, exactly as Legion said.
A lifetime ban is a lifetime ban. Period. End of story. It wasn't "lifetime with eligibility for reconsideration after 20", it was lifetime. MLB should grow a pair and stick to their decision. The Mitchell Report players should also be similarly banned, IMHO.
