I put on a set of mud (BFG) tires 6 months after I got my Land cruiser. I didn't really notice any change in MPG. I think maybe 1/2 miles difference. I couldn't stand the noise anymore. I change it back and have been running Bridgestone ever since. I have a new set of Revos and they are even quieter and ride better too. I am sure my Revos can go 80-90 % of what a mud tires would go off road. I had mud tires on my little 4WD pick up and didn't notice anything until I had the LC with AT tires and notice that they were so quiet. That's when I just couldn't deal with the noise any longer.

I love the way my Firestone Destination MT's look on the KJ. I hate everything else. Mud Terrains are loud with little traction on the road. Every time we go to the mountains, the rocks tear them to pieces and they don't do well in sand at the beach either. When its time I am going back to All Terains.
Went from 30s to 32s which effected the milage anyway. ![]()

I've gone back and forth between mud an a/t's but the difference in mileage has been so small (and in both directions) that it was most likely changes in my driving habits.
The best mud terrains I have had were Goodyear Wrangle MTR's (not the new ones with Kevlar) they handle well on the street, were quiet (for mud terrains), and still did okay in the sand....they didn't last long at all though and I had some chunks torn out of them when I'd play in the rocks. |

I'd guess you don't really give up a lot in MPG, but MT usually have more road noise. Plus people switching to MT's are usually doing it for the look, seriously how many of the MT trucks/Jeeps are really taken offroad? That's why when you see them they are almost bald, they are expensive and wear fast. I had the BFG AT's on my old Wrangler they were great, good traction, nice on the street and no noise. I switched to the Kumho AT's on my truck and like them too. The Kuhmos were only on for 10K (cause I sold the truck) but they were fine. I don't think there tread was as agressive as the BFG's but I didn't notice them wearing any faster or anything. Dueller Revo's are a great tire for a vehicle that sees mostly road use. They will be good for occasional offroad use. That is what came on my 07 Wrangler and they have 34K miles on them and still look new. They are great on road and still give good traction off. My only complainant is that I wish they would wear faster cause I want a larger tire, but I can't seem to get them to wear out.

Check out Tire Rack's reviews. They've never steered me wrong. In the sizes I've looked at for an AT on the Land Cruiser, the Firestone Destination AT is a freaking steal. They're rated very well and priced cheap. Not as mean looking as the Revos though.

Look into Hankooks. Not sure if they are worth a damn, but they look mean, and are really soft. My bro just put a set on his FJ60, the rest of the cruisers run AT's and are plenty of tire around these parts.
What are you putting tires on, if you don't mind me asking? Much of the time the problem can be solved by getting a different rig, like austin552 has figured out, maybe. J/K Austin, well maybe not. ![]()
