I know XJ Jaguars had that on the drive axles ( inboard brakes ). A lot of larger 4 wheelers / rock crawlers use that technology.

You see driveshaft parking brakes on some commercial trucks.

Works great as long as the driver puts the transmission in gear - LOL!

My '95 Range Rover had one of those, Discoveries do too. Of course it was a massive drum as opposed to a disk. It is good for highlighting how much drivetrain slack you have but you can't use it to stop the vehicle.

Here is a pic of one on a Discovery transfer case.

Old Technology. Quite a few of the older Grain type trucks had that. Take the stopping force of the disc, multiply that by the ring and pinion ratio, and it will hold back quite a lot of weight.

Some Rockwell axles have the disc brake on the pinion gear, and none at the wheel.

My old FJ40 Landcruiser had a drum on the rear output of the transfer case. I always thought it looked like a pretty good idea.

If it is a parking brake why is it a cross drilled disc? Is this maybe used as a single brake for hte rear wheels (with a locked differential)?

Nope, parking brake. The parts are sourced from motorcycles, it takes very little force to keep a gear-assisted parking brake locked, so it doesn't need to be big. It keeps the assembly up and away from dangerous rocks, and many of the 4x4 trucks that run these are running custom, handmade axles with no real parking brake application. Some people run linelocks/monolocks on the main brakes instead.

Standard fare in the off-road world. Guys have been installing those on their mini's and 4Runners, since at least the early - mid 90's.

My '66 CJ 5 had a driveshaft parking brake. It was a drum brake on the transfer case output shaft

Stock Dodge trucks from the 50's-60's had driveshaft parking brakes.
