When I was a kid I was bused to an all black school in the projects for 6th grade. ALL the boys wore low top Chucks. I had to get a pair. They were $10!!!!. My mother said no and I had to get a knock off pair for $8. The first day I wore them I about got laughed out of school. The "rich white boy" can't afford REAL Chucks.

Little did I know my mother was saving for me to go to college. Those other kids mom's.......not so much.

I usually wore CT's when playing drums. I always got better kick drum pedal feel with them versus a running type shoe.

Your mom must have been a good woman... sounds a lot like my Grandmother who did most of my raising.

It's amazing what those women did - and did without - to ensure we'd "have it better than them."

I wear Chucks. Comfortable and cheap. I've never paid more than $25 for them.. You're just not trying hard enough.

Have you seen what a pair of ghetto-fabulous Air-whatevers go for nowadays?

WhenI went to school, Chucks All Stars were the best you could buy. There was no such thing as a "running shoe.' I worked all summer for a pair ($8).

Shaun,
How is your situation related to Nike's? Do you also have t-shirt factories cranking out $.50 garments for your sales force?

I suggest small business owners relate more to each other's plights less they be sucked up/dry by the big corps.

How is it possible that these are $45/pair when you can get other, more modern designed sneakers for less???

It also looks like Converse has a no-discount policy on them. I checked a few places (like JC Penny) and they have a sale on sneakers that specifically excludes the Chuck Taylors.

I'm sure you can find a used pair on craig's list.

wearing mine right now...of course it only took them 3 tries to deliver to the correct address. and they charged me freight eveytime for their address mixup. luckily i did it on the CC so the charge got credited. great prices but otherwise that site sucks.

Why are they so expensive? Because people will buy them. Like the $1500 purses my g/f buys. There's no way it costs $50 to make a pair of these, even if you include a bowl of rice for each child laborer.

I get mine @ AmericanAthletics.com

And for the record, I'm wearing a pair right now - dark blue. I have ~35 pairs.

It's ALL your fault...I ordered two pair. One to stockpile for myself, another for a friend's birthday coming up...

Agreed, a heck of a price...even after they add shipping, it's like a 2 for one sale if buying directly from piloti.

(edit) Hope my delivery goes better than Ted's...I ordered by phone.

C'mon Paul you know you aren't really mad. Can never have too many Pilotis in reserve. They last really really well and at that price are a steal.

Not bad shoes for playing pool in, either...I wear 'em for the Mustang runs to the pool hall & back. Used to swear by my chuckies as a good driving shoe, but I'll confess...piloti works better.

BTW, in my school days we didn't call 'em Chuckies...they were "all stars".

Best driving shoe ever made. Their wide, flat bottom makes it really easy to heel/toe, and the thin, flexible sole makes it easy to feel the pedals. Not so good for walking around in, though. If I'm going to spend a lot of time on my feet I'll wear something else.

I get mine at Fred Meyer, where they are always on a buy one pair, get another at half price deal. So, I'm effectively paying about $30-$32 a pair.

I thought when Nike took them over that quality would tank. They haven't changed in the least, as far as I can tell, and I've worn them my whole life.

We called them Chucks and they cost 9 bucks back then. And that was not cheap in the mid 60's. I wore black high tops. They were "the" tennie to wear.
