Wow. Talk about getting ripped off.

Yikes. Man walks in for 6k service on his Ducati, $4600.

Not saying they didn't do some work, but $4600? Ugly.

No "only" $4,600. The 6K is 6,000 mile service.

Rocker arm-probably 750 or so... flaking rockers are a known issue w/ 748's
2 new tires w/ install-350
Brake rotor-300 or so
belt change is around 350 or so...
ECU change was probably to accomodate the pipe/ad hp and is around 2k with the dyno time...

Plus the other stuff.

So no, not ripped off, but Ducs can be stupid expensive.

And its still "just" a 748.

Why wasn't it under warranty at that mileage?

'02 model

Not saying that all the little bits of service didn't legitimately add up to $4600, but I wonder about that ECU change and the rockers. Seems like his only real performance mod has been a slip-on pipe. I'm a little surprised he'd need a new ECU for that, though I'm not familiar if there's some sort of upgrade to an "S" or "R" model ECU that might run that much. And flaking rockers are a known problem in all 4-valve Ducatis barring the original 851/888 series. Sometimes those can be covered (parts, though not labor) under goodwill. For that kind of bill, I think I would have been motivated to have DIYed some of that maintenance.

I can't imagine taking my bike to a dealer for non-warranty work unless it was some computer issue only they could diagnose. I DIY'ed my 12k mile service a few weeks ago and I think it ran me around $75 in parts.

He also said the last one (`02 748S Ti) he saw sold for $18k, so it sounds like he is living in Bizzaro World.

Basic Ducati ecu is 1300 bucks or so oem and they fry if voltage is ever reversed to them...

Programable ecu 1500 bucks or so plus tuning time...

As a potential buyer, I'd be interested in finding out why he had to replace the ECU. Upgrade, or was it fried? I see no other electrical work having been done (like replacing the fragile voltage regulator or stator).

At $9000, I think it's short by exactly 250cc.

I have been looking around, thinking about getting another Duc. I had my eye on a 748, but I think I'll stick to 2V Ducs thanks.....

That's right in the neighborhood of what I paid for my 900 Super Sport, with every conceivable performance upgrade and bit of farkle one could ever put on one.
