Windows 7 upgrade?
I have an HP media Center desktop PC currently running Vista Home Premium. I called HP tech support about upgrading to Windows 7. They were less than helpful. The HP website was only marginally better.
So here's my question. Can I use an off-the-shelf Windows 7 upgrdade or do I have to use one specifically for an HP? i.e. will the generic MS upgrade package have all the HP bits I need to run the desktop as it is now. Any help from the PC gurus will be appreciated.

Standard upgrade will do fine. Clean install is technically better than an upgrade but I use both with no issues.
When you upgrade, it will offer to update drivers before installing 7 - take that option. After the upgrade is finished. Check out the device manager for any unhappy drivers then look on HP site to see if they have released any 7 drivers - probably not. Win 7 will be fine. You will like it. Cannot upgrade from 32 to 64bit - need clean install.

All Vista drivers will work properly under Windows 7.
It really is a great operating system from the get go, Vista had teething problems in it's infancy that gave it a bad rap, but in it's final stages is comparable to the First release of 7 in terms of performance and stability. (Home Premium and Ultimate only, Vista basic is still a piece of crap) I've been using Windows 7 since August and have nothing more to say other than it does what I ask without giving a fit. |

Thanks for the replies. Looks like the generic, off-the-shelf version is my only choice anyway.
I've used Vista since it came out, and except for a few glitches early on, it's worked well for me. I just don't like how long it takes to load and the resources it uses. I hope Win7 is much better.

as said your better off with full version rather than upgrade
go for a clean install every time most software allows you to back up and create a restore or copy from a previous op system, Quote:
