Law regarding modification to an AK variant
OK, so heres the deal. This week I am flying home to Michigan to hunt deer. In addition to my deer rifle, I would like to bring my MAK-90 for plinking. The gun originally came with wood furniture that I replaced with a Fiberforce stock. The gun is a post ban 'sporterized' unit. The new stock does not have a pistol grip, and does not fold.
Since I would have to stick this thing under the nose of a TSA officer twice for inspection, am I going to run into any trouble? Really pisses me off that I even have to think about this crap. Not my gun, but its the same stock/gun combo: ![]()

Should be fine, but call the airline/TSA if you want to be ABSOLUTELY certain.

As long as the rifle is Federal Legal, you shouldn't have any problems. You're not taking it to California. From everything I've read, Michigan is fairly gun friendly.
Now, I have taken pistols to even California, and not had any issue at the Airports. California, compared to NY & NJ, is gun friendly.

Direct Link to TSA website
TSA: Traveling with Special Items Ammo is OK, it is best transported in original packaging. You can keep the ammo in magazines, BUT, you have to enclose them in some sort of pouch. And not everyone understands this. Print out the website and have copies with you while checking in. I would also go to your airline's website and look in the "sporting goods" section of baggage, and see what they require. Sometime they are more restrictive than the TSA.

Actually once you've gotten past the airline employee the TSA doesn't give it much notice.. As the case is locked and a signed slip is put in with the gun.. No way does the TSA know the difference between a legal gun and an illegal fully automatic weapon ( if that were the case). I've checked lot's of guns over the years.. I would not worry about it.
Where in MI are you hunting ?

Outside Crystal falls, about 80 mi north of Green Bay. If we get skunked up north, we may hunt a couple days around Ann Arbor.

I don't see anything pertaining to a firearm like that in the MI section of the ATF State Laws and Published Ordinances book.

The second time, the airline agent didn't look in the case, she called a TSA idiot* to come out and examine things. I locked it in front of him. * Not TSA in general, this agent in particular was an idiot. He freaked out when I pointed at the yellow NRA chamber flag I stuck in to show it wasn't loaded. "DON"T TOUCH THE WEAPON SIR!!" I wasn't close enough to touch it even if I wanted to. |
