Our Highschool had "Honors" level classes. They were more difficult, but as a bonus for taking the course, offered a grade above 'A'. A bonus of "1" was added to your Grade Points for the courses. This was to take into account that with the harder course, you would likely get a lower grade. It was to encourage people to take these courses, instead of taking all easy courses, and getting straight 'A's
Normal class A=4 B=3 C=2 D=1 F=0 In an Honors class A=5 B=4 C=3 D=2 F=1 I'm not sure it was even possible to fail the Honors and AP (Advance Placement). We had some pretty low scores in the first exam in AP physics. Usually people who were likely to fail, would drop or transfer to an easier class.

I get emails from some place that can make you an accountant for $20, well, give you an accountants degree anyway.
Or a really bad haircut + cheap black suit + bad teeth, maybe even bad breath to be extra authentic and just pretend for a couple of weeks ![]() |

How come no one ever aspires to marry a sales rep?

I don't know. because they can make some serious money. That said, I'd not marry anyone who admitted to aspiring to looking for a spouse based on their occupation. What if you want a career change someday?

My wife is "ABC" (American born Chinese) and there are a few things which really constitute the bedrock of Chinese culture. In decreasing order of priority.
1) Respect for your family's elders. It is a huge issue to go against the wishes of your elders. In the Chinese mind, you owe everything in your existence to your parents and grand-parents. To go against their wishes does two things... a) Invalidates the significant sacrifices that they made for you. b) Set the precedence that will end up having your children disrespect you. 2) Money is king. You can only trust money that is in your pocket. So professions that pay well draw a lot of Chinese. The better the money, the harder the competition. So the parents wish for a child to go into a certain profession is to ensure that child a secure future by being able to make a lot of money. Another aspect of this is the desire on the part of parents for their daughters to marry rich guys who can take care of the the daughter. It also has the knock on effect of insuring the parents' future after they are too old to work. 3) Education is important, primarily because it leads to money, but also because it earns respect from people. Scholars are always respected in the Chinese culture. That's my "Lo-fan" interpretation of what was going on.

An accountant? Really? That could mean a $200k/year enron employee... or a 40K/year dude who works at H&R Block.
If her parents are setting standards for those who she dates, they might as well aim for the sky... why not an astronaut or maybe a senator?

When crunch time came, I bet the doctor card would get a pass.
Now if she Indian, the whole issue of caste and religion would complicate it even more.. |

john...#2 is close. the career choice is about money. but equally as important is status. nothing warms a chinese parent's heart more than being able to say, my kid is a doctor! or lawyer...or married one.
my poor mom. 1 out of 3, aint so good. "lo fan", cantonese wife?
