More MS shenanigans, wtf??

I use MS Office 2002, I purchased it w/ a new computer in 2002 and it has served me very well.

Here's the issue,
for each of the last 2 days MS automatic updates has removed the ability of my computer to automatically open an Excel ss or access my E-mail through this set of programs. What happens instead is an attempt to install Office 2003 which I do not have. So I have had to use the original Office disk set to reinstall Office 2002 each time. This is such BS on top of the MS browser up date that totally failed to function(Chrome works great by the way).

Any one else run into this sort of nonsense? I am considering filing a complaint w/ the NYS AGs office.

Hasn't happened to my 2 computers with Win XP & an older MS Office. I never upgraded to the new-fangled Office 2002...

I also have set the MS auto updates to always ask me before updating any product.

Are you aware of Woody's Office Watch? You could post there and see if any of those experts knows of this problem.

no issues here either.

Is Office 2003 a free upgrade? IMO, you will have problems if you try to "upgrade" only part of a software suite (ie MS automatic updates).

my dell i purchased about 5 years ago was working fine with the pre installed WS office program. Recently, everything locked up, said i needed to re-install the MS program to fix. Dell sent a CD to do the re-install..........didn't work. Lost most of my recent Quick Books data, dispite having back-up dics. Now, about $500. lighter and lost data to boot, will never buy MS or Dell again. Gonna go Mac, like I started along time ago.........pretty bitter right now.

Office 2002. That's bit sophisticated isn't it. I use Office 97.

And I never have any problems.

Bill,

It's a known issue posted on MS, one of their patches pooched the older version of office and/or it's files. Check their fix

Use the above fix, then:

1. Turn off auto update. No need to fix it if it ain't broke.

2. Occasionally check MS updates and pick and choose which updates you want. I always skip the Office stuff unless there is an issue I am trying to resolve.

3. Try Firefox for a browser.

I did check MS but didn't find anything, have you got a more specific reference.

I suspect that the issue may be the free 60 day trial Ofice 2003 that I never used but also never removed.

I removed the free 2003 trial version, gave myself quite a scare as all my e-mail disappeared too, but after I repaired Offie 2002 from the disks all seems to be well.

I hate having to deal w/ this nonsense, what a waste of time.

I've considered open office but am concerned that some of the things I do w/ ss won't work. The ss that comes w/ MS Works certainly won't work w/ my spread sheets
