Dye penetrant and magnaflux are not the same thing. Geez! How do you expect the dummies to keep up?

I have never had an engineer be able to answer that question for me. Not even engineering students. If I was a professor it would be the first question asked to a new class. It would be the first question on every test. It would be the final thing I said to the students when they graduated.
8 simple words...
Easy answer. Engineers judiciously apply scientific principles and technology in an effective and cost efficient manner to deliver solutions for the resolution of problems.

Edited for brevity:

Engineers make things work. Cost effectively. (7)

Magnaflux is a brandname for 2 dye penetrant products, Red spot check and Zyglo.

They also make Magnaglo which is actually magnetic in nature.

We were SUPPOSED to use Zyglo, but usually we had to live with Red spot check.

OK.

Magnafluxing or magnaflux has always meant mag particle testing to me. Magnaflux (they do dye and particle) the trademarked name is kinda like folks using "Kleenex" to describe all tissue paper...in reverse.

A bit wordy but we have a winner!!!!!!

"Takes scientific principles and puts them to practical use"

People will always be in awe of the physicist. The engineer is just the worker bee.

There are a few key things that set an engineer apart. That is why it became somewhat wordy.

Judgement: Engineers MUST use judgement

Scientific Principles: Engineers are trained in the science and must understand the PRACTICAL value of what the physicists, chemists, biologists and mathematicians know in great detail

Technology: Engineers must know what is valid technology and if I may also add have a detailed understanding of the trades and how that is applicable

Effective: It has gotta work within the tolerances required (see judgement and scientific principles and technology and applications of trades skills;

Cost: It has gotta be within budget. No gold plating

Solutions: It has gotta solve a valid problem

Problems: It has gotta be a real problem, not some nice to have (again no gold plating).

What do they do...

They induce thinking of the pejorative 'smart-ass.'

(which confuses those accustom to throwing out the pejorative 'dumb-ass' )

Awesome explanation Daminal. I think that's why my experiences with engineers have not been the best for the most part. Unfortunately I have worked with people that have the title engineer without the education. Then be responsible for the outcome. Or they are book smart and have no common sense.

Engineers have to dumb down everything to explain it to their laymen neighbors or coworkers. They are trained from the start to make themselves unintelligible, and to only know what they need to know (everything else is found in a book somewhere).

Physicists don't have to dumb down anything, because they have such a clear and deep understanding that they can explain it, at full power, from first principles such that nearly anyone can understand it. (note, this does NOT work on internet forums...)

Heehee! Such a fun thread!
