Given the subject, I thought this might be a relevant thread that I started a while back. I did a spreadsheet, of sorts, comparing the calories:alcohol content of various beers. Most light beers, as you will see have lots of calories relative to the alcohol content. Here is the link. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/487521-beer-alcohol-calorie-comparison.html

As part of my weight loss plan, I have begun to do the "stairmaster" at work. There's a 3 flight stairwell at work that isn't that busy. So at lunchtime, I'll spent 30 minutes walking up and down those stairs. This is a great cardio workout - really gets the heartrate up!

Today while walking up and down these stairs, I came up with a decent goal for me to do -- this year, I want to take the stairs to the top of the Empire State Building. No running, no time restriction - just walk up and down those 102 flights of stairs. (That's 1,576 steps) They do have an annual Empire State Building Run-Up - maybe I can do it then - :D

I will be working on this as I am not "in" this year. keep at it, you can do it, you will be much healthier!!

Perhaps we can turn that into a get-together in NY for "PPOT - Walk the Empire?" What do you guys think? I would be in...

Absolutely!! Heck I've in CT and have never been there.

Z-man 01-13-2010 07:26 PM

I like it! After this contest is over, we shall do the official "Pelican Parts Empire State Building Climb." This can't be a race, rather an opportunity to accomplish a goal and encourage each other every step of the way. :ccol:

I will call the Visitor center tomorrow and see if it is possible, and if we need any permits/screening...etc.

So far, we've got three interested. I will start another thread so as not to get this thread off-track.

That's a great idea!

red-beard 01-14-2010 06:33 AM

I expect I can do it, but I doubt I can get to NYC anytime soon.

The Gaijin 01-14-2010 08:05 AM

I'll walk over. I am in. A few decent bars nearby.

From the Empire State Building website:
Quote:

All stairways in the building are fire/emergency stairs and the Fire Dept. of New York City, our insurance carrier and building management policy prohibit the use of the stairs for any other reason except for once each year when we host the Empire State Building Annual Run Up stair climbing competition which is organized by the New York Road Runners Club.
The Road Runner event will occur on Feb 2nd this year, and the application for the Empire State Building Run-Up is CLOSED per the Road Runner club website.

Well, maybe next year for the Empire State Building. :(

However - the Statue of Liberty Crown is open. I can look into pricing for that. You guys still interested?

Also - I would encourage other Pelicanites outside of the Metro New York area to look into climbing their tallest structures -- the the Space Needle in Seattle, the Sears Tower in Chicago...etc. Maybe we can coordinate our climbs and see how many steps we took towards weight loss! (I know, it's cheesy - but whatever it takes to keep us all motivated...)

Are we supposed to check in regularly? Hmmmm. 244 this morning. Just me, the water, the Bowflex, and the treadmill. And a fridge full of beer that's starting to look,,,,well,,,,,,,really really tasty. Especially those XX's.

aigel 01-17-2010 08:19 AM

I need your new 2 week numbers by tomorrow evening. Of course you are supposed to check in! The new data will be collected and posted by Tuesday eve.

Had a slight setback... aka my birthday was last week and everyone kept saying "lets take you out to dinner" and I simply cannot say no to Red Lobster and King Crab legs. Two nights in a row...

Am now back down to 245, in other words what I started with two weeks ago...

270 this morning. The trend is in the correct direction!

lendaddy 01-17-2010 09:53 AM

Ok, didn't know we were supposed to check in. Just weighed myself at 313.4. The first 10-20 is easy but I hope to be solidly under three bills by my birthday on the 02/26.

12own911 01-17-2010 10:09 AM

140.8 as of yesterday's weigh in at weight watchers.

Absolutely. Haven't been there either.

Schumi 01-17-2010 01:03 PM

I don't have a scale at home, so I have to resort to using a pad from my race scales to weigh in. I'm down 5 lbs so far...

just been eating in more, less fast food. beer intake has not and will not change.

lowyder993s 01-17-2010 01:50 PM

252...down 4.5. What's strange...very easy to get on the bike and knock out a couple 25 milers...usually I'm hurting. Hopefully back in the 40-50 mile range in a couple weeks.
