I bought a Mac tonight~

Ladies and gentlemen, I have now changed. I kicked out the "*****" and made the "switch" and folks, I want to tell you that I am now officially gay.

My Sony Vaio PCG-K35, a laptop probably made of concrete....finally developed one too many problems today, so I went over to the Apple store at the Galleria and brought home a new toy, a MacBookPro, 13 inch size.

Bill Gates has great taste in cars, but he's otherwise a dirty, money-grubbing tycoon, no different from John D. Rockefeller, Cornelius Vanderbilt, or Henry Flagler. All of these businessmen basically RAPED other businessmen in the pursuit of the all-mighty dollar bill. They were sucessfull, but that doesn't mean they are right.

YET-

Henry Ford got rich because he used common sense to produce a product. He built a car that everyone could afford, largely because he figured out a way to build it cheap. As a result, his more "consumer-friendly" products were in great demand and he used the revenue to build his car company into the largest in the world.

-The problem with Henry's cars these days is that they are kind of plastic and cheap and common. I don't care about the "common" part, but my other car, a '97 Ford Aerostar...is built of materials that make me cringe sometimes. I changed out the heater core on this car a few years ago and I couldn't believe how cheesy the dashboard actually was!

Apple just makes a better product. In 2004 when I took my Vaio out of its box, I plugged its' brick into the wall and turned it on. It booted up.

Fine.

When I opened the Mac box tonight, I was greeted by a visual, and a bunch of questions. The opening screen was WAY beyond anything that Windows XP offers. It really reminds me of the difference between my 928 [little on-board electronics] and her Acura TSX, which has a GREAT on-board electronics suite. Now I know that computers have progressed in 6 years, but after using this computer and dealing with the kids in the Apple store in Fort Lauderdale....I can tell you that both are far better at their jobs than their compatriots.

What I will say is that there is going to be a steep learning curve for me. I downloaded Google Chrome [and so should you, if you haven't yet!!]. But I cannot figure out where it went. It doesn't show up at the bottom, and I cannot open "file" and find it~

dammit.

Oh well, I'm sure it will work out in the end. As of tonight, I have an Apple~

its official. normy is gay. and he thinks that steve jobs is somehow fundamentally different and bill gates.

i dual booted my PC for awhile, but found that i never used the mac os. and it is much more difficult to tweak the hardware and OS than windows.

anyway, good luck with finally sorting your sexual preference. not sure what that has to do with buying a mac, but whatever....

Cool more time for fun stuff now you don't have to waste so much time farting around in Windows, and trying to kill virus's.

Welcome to the machine!

Your file should be in the Downloads folder under you user account. As well the find is when you open up your hard drive and there is a little search window in the upper right corner of the screen, or the blue magnifying glass in the upper right. (or you can type the two keys apple - F together)

It would be nice if you continued to inform us of your experiences.

I wouldn't agree for a moment about your opinion of Bill, but we're all intitled to one.
I have a deep respect for both Bill and Steve (not that we're on a first name basis).
I've read both their life stories and they're awesome guys imo.

I'm gonna be getting an Apple Laptop soon.... so your account of challenges will be helpful.
Happy days,
Thanks Norm.

When you downloaded it your browser download manager kept track or it. Run Safari, top menus pull down Window->Downloads.

Locate the Chrome download in the list, right click and chose Reveal in Finder.

That will open the default folder set for saving downloads. You can change this is prefs.

Install Chrome. First time yo run it it'll pop up in you dock, right click it and it will give you the option to keep it in the doc.

Top righ corner of the screen is a little magnifying glass, when you can't find something click it to pop oprn a box and start typing.

I didn't want to say anything, but Apple has a big presentation at the end of January; most say they will unveil a tablet, but I wouldn't be surprised if they also did more for the MacBooks.

Yes please don't forget Bill bailed out Apple with $150M, so if it's wasn't for him, they wouldn't be around...

Apple would still be around. Turnaround would have been slower without the cash which was critical for MSFT to cough up before the Fed ruled MSFT a monopoly and broke it up.

Good choice on the Mac. Please keep us ( the mac faithful ) informed on how you like the experience.

(I could, but I won't, debate your casual overview of the industry titans, but that's for another thread)

Do yourself a favor and get used to what software the machine was made to run on and thats Safari. Its a lot different on a Mac. There will be a much smaller learning curve than you think. The biggest thing I had a hard time getting over is how easy things are. If you don't want a program anymore, just drop in it the trash can!!! Simple!

Get the Apple Time Capsule Wifi so you can use Time Machine and wirelessly back up your computer.

If you need any help let us know - I am sure there are plenty of Mac geeks on here!

Um, I dont think so. Jeesh. That's the thanks?

Here's $150,000,000 Steve, atta boy!
(most of my friends wouldn't lend me 150 bucks yet alone?)

Read Richard Branson's latest book called "Business Striped Bare" and he'll tell you straight about Bill Gates. They're friends. I wouldn't undermine any of their accomplishments (Richard included) and if Apple plays their cards right, they can make a few more Billions; ha.

Bill has a company that runs without him; Steve on the other hand has not done that yet. Great article in last months Fortune Mag all about Steve and his company (was about half the mag, voted CEO of the year by Fortune Mag)

At home been running Macs for about 9 years. We got a new desk top last year and it has been very nice. There are somethings I prefer better on the PC but overall the Mac seems better. One little nitpick I have is formatting from Mac word document to PC word. The spacing is sometimes different which can create additional troubles when switching between the two.

Did you know that people who come out and proclaim this spiritual conversion are actually viewed by the well established as n00bs?

Hopefully the 'sensors' won't block this but...after 2 years of trying I'm going back to Windoz. Mac OS-X is good but no better than Windows XP.

Apple is far more tight-fisted than even Microsoft. Their source codes and methods are guarded enough to make even Bill Gates blush.

If "making a statement" with your computer is really important to you, then screw 'em all. Go Linux. Or FreeBSD. As far as Apple v. Mac goes, I find the Macs to be far better and more reliable. My next computer purchase (laptop) is going to be a NetBook - probably some flavor of Air. I tire of having to download a dozen patches/upgrades every damn time I boot up. You don't get that problem with Macs (not nearly as much) and you DEFINITELY don't get it with Linux... Just something to consider. Both make software that's fine for the average user though and it works fine overall.
