Equally sad is that in those days a Rolex was a tough, quality workaday tool watch. Now, it has morphed inot one of the biggest luxury brands in the world.

IMO- the best value tool watch is the classic Seiko mechanical diver. Love these things, inexpensive, tough as nails. "Fitness for purpose" in every way. This is what a Rolex was in the 50's....

Couldn't agree more... I have a half dozen Seiko divers in various colors... love em!

Got one of those Seikos, great watch for the money and tough as nails but does not keep time too well.

I just voted Omega, because thats whats on my wrist!

Thanks for the input gents. Very, very helpful. The Omega just seemed to be a better watch for the long run. Cheers.

Buy a used Rolex Explorer. Get one of the newer ones, since they redesigned the case and band and tweaked the movement. Then get it refinished by Rolex.

Have it adjusted, and any decent watchmaker can do that. If its a version with the Seiko 7286 mechanical movement, they can be adjusted to within acceptable tolerance. If its a quartz one, even easier.

Harddrive- very nice, good choice.
